Hello :)

I just received a Chini Champa from UK and the only leaf it has,has yellow streak patterns on it as well as some blackish ones. Here are some pictures of it:

Is this BSV or something else?

Thank you very much in advance! :)

It's possible. It looks similar to the BSV on my Mysore, but the streaks on my Mysore are more pronounced.

I am not as adapt at identifying banana species as most here, mostly because the range of bananas
in HZ 6 is limited and i have not been exposed to a lot of varieties, but I doubt, that anything conclusive
can be determined unless you stick it in the ground or pot and give it a month or so to recover. Then, after
the first new leaf appears, show us a picture.

Your plant has obviously suffered from the lengthy transfer without light. I would certainly keep it out
of direct sunlight until it shows signs of new growth.

Konstantinos, that might not be enough pictures to help identify the problem. :ha:

I think Olaf has the right idea, let it get growing and then see how it looks.

I agree, not much use in trying to tease out something like that when the plant has other issues. Let it establish and grow out some. Not every yellowish streak seen on a leaf is BSV, so no need to worry just yet, or at all potentially, since the effect of BSV on plant health is variable depending on lots of things, and it is not always problematic when present.

Thank you very much all of you for your replies and information!

Mitchel,
I had a hard time getting the camera to focus on the patterned areas without having glare and wanted to make sure the patterns can be seen well.

Gabe,
Thank you very much for your knowledgable reply on this! I also thought it might be something else and that's why I posted pictures. It looks somewhat like BSV but not very right for it either. The only reason I posted so soon is that I planned on ground planting it this weekend and it arrived with suspicious patterning. I will keep it potted and wait it out for good new leafs. I hope we can call what it has soon and be able to ground plant it this year. It's issues were slight dehydration during it's shipping and 1 day's sun damage. When it arrived, the yellow streak patterns were clearly visible on an otherwise healthy looking green leaf, the general yellowing and burn you see is from the sun and lack of sufficient root system as it was a rooting corm with a leaf.

I wouldn't like to keep a banana with BSV even if it doesn't affect it too much, only from fear of transferring it to the rest of my bananas, who are healthy. I am in a Citrus and cotton growing area and so have high chances of having the vector mealy bug if I remember right. What are your thoughts on this? I find interesting what you said about BSV.

Thank you very much in advance :)

I would just plant it and monitor it, check for citrus mealybugs and control them if needed, and go from there. If it is a tissue cultured plant, it could also be chimeric variegation, or it could be some herbicide damage, or a nutrient issue...who knows, but at least give it a chance to grow out. It is unlikely to cause any problems for your other plants.

Thank you very much for your very informative reply and suggestions Gabe! :)

I will wait it out and see how it's doing after a month, when I return from my vacations. It's a shoot of a biggish disk shaped corm and appears as if the top of the corm of a biggish banana was chopped off and the meristem contined growing.

I will be taking new pictures upon my return home and hopefully it will be healthy...

Thank you very much again for your help! :)

Here are the newer leafs of my 'Chini Champa' after 2 weeks of growth:

What do you think of them? To me,the markings don't look very BSV like but I would very much appreciate your help on this. What caused the markings it has?

Thank you very much in advance! :)

It looks much happier now for sure. I bet the next leaves won't have any sign of the previous streaking. I'd be willing to bet that you never see any more on it.

Thank you very much for your reply Sandy! :) I hope so but so far, things arent very encouraging.

Here are some new photos of my 'Chini Champa'. The markings look increasingly like BSV markings.

What do you think? Can we positively call it BSV already or is it still questionable? What else may it be? Is there any point in waiting this plant out any more or shall i just find a replacement from another nursery? I know not all Chini Champa have BSV as i imported 3 last year(for a friend) from another nursery and all were healthy.

Thank you very much in advance!
