View Full Version : What kind of a plant is this?

This plant may have been seeded/germinated prior to its base being flooded for >two months. But it
obviously is doing well while the base is completely submerged. I also am at a loss for the name of
the small water lily type plant. I would appreciate help with the ID of either plant.

The white arrow points at another plant, which is just sprouting beside the larger one. I
have no idea, if they are connected by a common rhizome. The yellow flowering plant
showed up years ago in a little pond, which I have now converted into my “tropical planter”.

Perhaps some type of berry?

Olaf,

Can't tell exactly what type of water lily that is without looking at the undersides of the leaf. Is it red, purple or green? It appears in the photo that you have two lily buds showing, one opened and the other unopened. As for the other plant it could be a black cohosh, a medicinal plant.

Can't positively identify that one without seeing leaf structure or a flower. I have something similar in my woods but it's too early to tiptoe out and take a lookie-loo.

Thank you, Mike, Seweryn has just identified it as "Nymphoides peltata - protected species
in Poland :)"

I have confirmed it and the popular name here is "Yellow Floating Heart". Protected in Poland
and invasive in Maine :)

I am still working at the Black Cohosh ID. I have just downloaded a leaf schematic and will
take it out to the pond later today for comparison.

Okay, Mike, this is what I got:
You suggested it was an Actaea racemosa (black cohosh, black bugbane, black snakeroot,
fairy candle; syn. Cimicifuga racemosa) and for all I can ascertain at this time (the plant in
the pond is still quite young), that is dead on.

I have a Cimicifuga Atropupurea growing nearby, perched between our patio and the fence (see
picture), but did not make the connection until your ID of it. The atropurpurea has
purple-green leaves and prefers shade and the one in the pond has a ‘foot bath’ in full sun.

Because of the difference in the colour of the foliage there are some doubts, if the one in the
pond is a seedling of the atropupurea.

This is a picture of one of my C. Atropurpureas. The amber flower stalks are from the
Przewalsky Ligularia to the right though. The C. A. will soon produce white flowers.
