Jane, you can save the tops from store bought ones or buy other varieties. I prefer something that you can't buy in the store!http://cgi.ebay.com/PINEAPPLE-PLANT-Kona-Sugarloaf-SP_W0QQitemZ190094377324QQcategoryZ25463QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem

cool

I think I have 6 kinds now, your usual Dole and DelMonte, and 4 ornamentals: two dwarves (Ananas nana and another very redddish brown seen below), one variegated, and one Ananas Mongo

good place for pineapples.. http://www.fruitlovers.com/fruittreeprices.html

i would stay away from ebay pineapple plants.. as i got a several a fews years ago, but had razors on blades.

the co. above i purchased two slips and are razorless and are real sugarloafs from hawaii..

no, you don't need min. order on these tops..

these will grow faster than those on ebay, since shoots, slips and pups. these come from already fruited plants and will fruit quicker..

here's a link to some of my plants..http://sgbananas.spaces.live.com/?_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaHandler=TWljcm9zb2Z0LlNwYWNlcy5XZWIuUGFydHMu UGhvdG9BbGJ1bS5GdWxsTW9kZUNvbnRyb2xsZXI%24&_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaFolderID=cns!17DFB22666F22EA6!119&_c11_PhotoAlbum_startingImageIndex=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_commentsExpand=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_addCommentExpand=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_addCommentFocus=0&_c=PhotoAlbum (http://sgbananas.spaces.live.com/?_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaHandler=TWljcm9zb2Z0LlNwYWNlcy5XZWIuUGFydHMu UGhvdG9BbGJ1bS5GdWxsTW9kZUNvbnRyb2xsZXI%24&_c11_PhotoAlbum_spaFolderID=cns%2117DFB22666F22EA6%21119&_c11_PhotoAlbum_startingImageIndex=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_commentsExpand=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_addCommentExpand=0&_c11_PhotoAlbum_addCommentFocus=0&_c=PhotoAlbum)

Those are nice photos. I have already harvested my first crop last summer, and I have a bunch of new ones maturing now. I am wondering if the second crop will be larger sized fruits? I think what I have now are smooth cayannes.

Jeffrey, Fruit size is determined by a few things, (other than plant variety). Here are a few links that may be helpful

It took my pineapple about 3 years to fruit after the first one and the quality was much lower. I am still waiting for it to put up a new pup, but it has not. I am afraid it is now dead, but I have two tops I started and a pup I seperated from it last year so I have a few going still.

I believe your red one is Ananas lucidus.

Below are pictures I've taken of various pineapple.

Thanks Gabe, I looked that one up, and indeed it very may well be.
Here is a nice new photo of one of mine, I have about ten in the spot where this one is, most all with fruit:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=2979&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2979)

Speaking of pineappes, I just got this one, too:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=2978&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2978)
Variegated with no spines!
I think it's Ananas comosus variegata 'Smooth Cayenne' but if there's a shortened, more appropriate name, do let me know!
I found this PDF while researching it
http://hort.ifas.ufl.edu/shrubs/ANACOMB.PDF

I found this other nice webpage while researching it. There's a great series of photos at the end showing a commercial pineapple operation sowing a field.

Mitchell. Very nice!!! Be careful, last time a critter stole my pineapple. I think it was a possum as they left the chewed up half way eaten fruit under the banana plants.

Jarred. Great Ananas collection you have going!! Do you sell/trade any of those red leaves and variegated leaves pineapples? Thanks.

MediaHound
05-16-2007, 08:41 AM
Richard, hopefully one day I'll be able to trade the variegated ones, but for now, not enough! And they grow so slllowww!
But I can definately hook you up with the red kind, the Ananas lucidus. If you can find Ananas mongo, that's a great one, too, but again, I have so very little of them at the moment. Anywhoo, shoot me a PM so we can iron it out on the Lucidus. Mine are in full sun and are really brightly colored, they are nice!

Woohoo! Thanks Jared. I'm really looking forward to the plant. I'll get my part out this weekend.
The sweet smell was probably what attracted the possum to my fruit. =) so be careful. Although mine was tiny fruitlet (pot grown) compared to Mitchell. I had just recently planted out about 20 pineapples that were in pots.

Yes you need to make sure all the meat is gone by trimming with a sharp knife, then pluck several of the leaves off the bottom leaving a bare stalk sticking out. Let it dry out a few days and then plant it.

Thanks,

Smooth Cayenne is the most commonly grown, it's the commercial variety sold in most grocery stores.

modenacart
10-17-2007, 09:53 PM
This is not the commerical one. The plant looks very different. I don't mean the fruit that you start a top with, but the plant they sell with a small pineapple already on top.

NANAMAN
10-17-2007, 10:48 PM
They could be any variety, nurseries force them to bloom early to make them more appealing to shoppers. The plants I've seen like that were too small to support a full size fruit.

modenacart
10-18-2007, 04:20 PM
I have gotten one like that to fruit twice already and the fruit never reached full size. The plant was much smaller than other pineapple plants. I never did anything to force a fruit either.

I think the roots are fairly shallow, as the tend to flop over easily.

I've found that the best way to get the top off, is to twist it off. It comes odd clean, with no fruit attached.

Here are pictures of some I grew from seed:

Don't give up Anna! I'm starting to thing they are like bananas in that they need a certain amount of optimal temp days before they will fruit. I have a variegated one in a clay pot that still hasn't flowered and it was planted about the same time as my others.
