I posted this in the health forum, but figured I would post it here too to get some more eyes on it.

Hi Everybody, I was looking at my bananas in my sunroof yesterday and noticed these little things on the base of the psuedostem. I sprayed them with neem oil hoping it would take care of them, but tonight I checked and they were in a bigger colony on the psuedostem then before. They are only at the base and in the soil. They move quicker then lightning. I thought I saw something that looked like maybe an ant but bigger then these little guys. I just bought this house 2 years ago and was told they had a big problem with water ants any chance they may be juvenile water ants. Any help on getting rid of them of and ID would be appreciated.

They are certainly not Ants of any kind because ants turn from pupae to ants with no instars ( semi adults). I suggest that they may be mites which you can control with pytherium or rotenone if you wish use organic. If they are sucking bugs, warm water with washing liquid kills on contact only!

I would try orthene works great on aphids. it does not bother plants but kills bugs.
