Anyone else have issues with the heat lately? It has been very hot, dry, and windy here for the last few days. The official temp in Las Vegas yesterday was 114F. My house is in the hottest area of the Las Vegas valley and weather stations around me were reporting 117-119F. Combine that with 8% humidity and high wind and the results aren't pretty on banana plants. The only variety i'm growing that has a difficult time with the heat is 'Ice Cream'. I have 'Ice Cream' growing in 4 different locations and all were damaged (even the ones in the shade). The cardaba, Misi Luki, Raja Puri, and Orinoco seem relatively undamaged.

Here is a mat of 'Ice Cream' that got hit the hardest. A week ago, they looked pretty good. Not a pretty sight now...

G'day.....In Australia, its just the opposite. Its Cold and wet, normally winter is the dry season, but it won't stop raining. Bananas are doing good though, dwarf ducasse about to ripen, just harvested some ladyfingers and Goldfinger senting out a massive bell. http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49673&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49673) http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49686&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49686)url=http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=49611]http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=49611&size=1[/url]

I've been watering, watering, watering, this summer. But with good results. So far in the driveway, watering twice a day, I've kept my big bananas from losing a leaf in 100+ heat. It's taking about 15 gallons a day in each of those big pots.

It was warm, humid, and rainy today here. Not typical for SoCal, especially in July. I'm sure the bananas enjoyed it.
