I have tried several different strategies for winterizing them, and one of the ones that I chopped down and covered with a trash can has its first flower! I was starting to think that my growing season was just too short.

I posted photos of the progression from the first cold snap in the fall until today in my photo gallery

This was the morning after the first cold snap last fall

Then we cut them down. I really hated to do it, but they were much too big to bring in and they didn't look too good anyway.

We raked leaves around them and covered them with trash cans.

We had cut the small pups off and brought them in the house or garage. They do wonders for the cat box smell in the garage!

I wasn't sure what to think when we uncovered them in the spring. I was afraid I had waited too long since the winter was so mild.

After a couple of weeks, they looked much better

This was recently. The tall plants were left in the ground. The small ones came indoors for the winter. They usually get pretty tall in the garage, but then they lose leaves when they get moved back outdoors.

I am thinking that more will stay outside this winter.

That is very encouraging. I would have been devastated after the frost damage, but obviously your plants have recovered very well. Thanks for posting the progress.
