I came across these at a farmers market in Quepos, Costa Rica. I just had to have them.

Well I was lucky enough to try the fabled queen of all fruits, and I wasn't disappointed. It was the best tasting fruit I ever had. The only thing that compares are some mangoes that I had, also in Costa Rica.

That means you haven't had a good atemoya yet.

I read about a guy that was offered ten bucks for one atemoya from his tree and he turned the guy down so he could eat it himself.

Don't happen with naners.:ha:

And I'm pretty sure you can grow atemoyas where I live :)

Yep --- Try Priestly or Geffner. I will start looking for one myself after I'm done with the other new trees. Zones 9b and 10a are the limit by the way. Had a local guru give a talk on Atemoya and others at my club recently. Got everybody crazy.

Don't get me wrong. I do like Mangosteen. I've only had imported ones, BUT . . .

I think some of the hype with the mangosteen is the rarity/scaricity.

I personally thought as far as quality they rated with a good orange. That said oranges are high quality fruit.

Who decides which fruit is the best in the world ?

Well, it was the best tasting fruit that I ever had. I'm not saying it is the best :ha: And the ones I had were fresh.

I'd still grow a Mangosteen if I could in CA. I have little pitiful Gambage seedlings. Kind of a relative. . .

I'm just jealous you got fresh Mangosteens . . . . :ha:

It might be possible if you live in one of those rare zone 11 areas in California....like Santa Monica. Or if you have a greenhouse.

I heard legend that a sadly tree did live for a while in Orange County where Jackfruit, Mammey Sapote, Sugar Apple, etc. are possible. Probably one for the heated greenhouse though.

With so many choices of tropical trees to plant, Mangosteen never made it on my list. After reading your opinion the next time I purchase trees it will be included. The one tree I have always wanted is the Persimmon, but it has a very low chill requirement.

Persimmon does fine here in PSL zone 9b. I have 2 potted Fuyu waiting to be planted.

Persimmon does great here in SoCal too. A family friend has a persimmon tree, and it makes tons of them every year.

Several members of my club grow black sapote right here in zone 9b. Shows up often on the tasting table. Tastes best whipped up with miracle whip.

I have to move mine inside. They are in pots. I am in Zone 9, but even a NorCal Zone 10 is too cold for them. They start to decline, etc. They seem to be doing well as pot specimens though.

Keith, my friend Bryan and Montoso Gardens has mangosteen seedlings but they are very slow to fruit (maybe 15 years). Some of his favorites include pulusan and rambutan which he also offers. Do you have those?
