I am pretty new to growing bananas. I am in northern IL and I have a dwarf cavendish and two truly tiny. My two truly tiny are pupping like crazy :) the problem I am having is when I cut the pup of the mother plant it looks like death after a couple of days. I cut off two pups a couple of weeks ago. One turned black and doesn't look good at all but the other is still some what green but no growth. Are the just in shock? I usually cut all the lower leaves off and leave the new leaf coming up. I cut as close to the mother plant to get as much corm as possible. What an I doing wrong? What is the best way to cut these pups off?

They are prob 6-8 inches I will try to take some pictures tonight. One had two good roots but the other one had no roots to it? They were both the same size.

Black isn't good. I had some T/C's that about died till I set up a mister to keep the humidity up.. I hope your not using a high moisture retaining soil mix like miracle grow.. I killed alot banana's with that stuff.. How many roots were on the pups is the question.. :^)

It probably is a moisture issue. I planted the pups in two different types soils and the one that's having the problem does retain alot of moisture. Plus it didn't have any roots for some reason.

What are your priorities?
Having more plants or getting the mother plant to grow faster?

Small pups, with small corms, and few or no roots like yours are going to struggle. If you want to propagate your plants so you have more of them, let the pups get bigger before you separate them. If you just want the mother plant to not compete with its pups, cut them off small like you are and kill them.
