hello everyone I bought two Musa Basjoo plants at the local nursery. A week after planting them in our back yard the new leaves began to turn brown. Now it seems that the new leaves that come out are coming out with large thinning spots which eventually turn brown.. I will add two pictures of the plants. Any help is greatly appreciated..
thanks

Hi,
My Basjoo did the exact same thing after I planted in to a pot. I planted it in garden soil and was pretty generous with the miracle gro trying to help revive it, when I noticed an almost identical leaf browning. I backed way off the miracle gro and water, letting it dry out more between waterings. I also took it out of full sun (we had 100+ temps) and after two weeks it looked much better pushing out all green healthy leaves. It wasn't the best science because I'm not sure what did the trick, but I'm pretty sure it was transplant/culture shock. The general rule of thumb I've been told by really experienced growers is that if the plant is actively growing, pushing out new leaves and they look fairly healthy (even if only for a short time) then the plant is still doing ok. I hope this helps!

Mine did the exact same when we got it and added it to a pot. I learned that it needed shade in the afternoon and sun in the morning. We were lucky when we have a porch on the east side of our house, and we have a two story apartment so we were pretty lucky. But also once the leaves a infected/burnt they don't get any better so we just cut them off and the plant grew on.

Thank you guys, I stopped watering the plants as often as I used to several weeks ago and still get the same results. The new leafs come up nice and green but when they unwrap they are already burnt.

hmmm do you know what kind of soil you have or are using? Also, are you experiencing high temps with low humidity?

hi Andy,
We live in southern New Jersey, the temperatures have been a bit hot lately but the plants were like this before the temperature spike. We transplanted the plants from its original pots into top soil bought from our local nursery..

Hi,
It sounds like everything is great for them. My guess would be theyre getting too much sun. Once I put mine back into part shade they looked a lot better. If they were grown under a shade cloth, this might especially be the case. Either way, as long as the plant is pushing out new leaves and actively growing and the brown leaf edges don't kill the leaf, I would say the plant should be looking fine in a few more weeks--probably some form of transplant shock. I hope this helps!

Hi fajoza45,
I took a look at the pics you posted--it looks very similar to what happened to mine. Because the plant over all looks pretty healthy and the new leaves are coming up all green for a time, it looks to me to be some kind of transplant/culture shock. If its new home is markedly different from the nursery conditions, more sun or more heat especially, then I would say thats probably the cause and the plant is just in a reacclamation stage. You might could try a shade cloth, but it should start to look better after a few weeks. I hope this helps!
