My Orinoco is pupping like crazy. Some pups not moving as fast as others. My question is how many should I keep? I want most of the energy to go to the mother plant to keep up the speedy growth.

Leave em all in. lol :woohoonaner:

Orinoco is famous for exploding pots, and with all the pups it should be dramatic. It generates the most vigorous growing root mass of any naner I've had. If you remove them all it still should eventually split that tub open.

Seriously though -- why don't you try a short cycle one like Viente Cohol. Best shot at getting fruit in Ontario in late summer. Just grow the pup big indoors during winter.

Thanks for the reply, I did have a Viente Cohol from Bob 2 years ago but ended up dying over winter indoors.(out of the four bananas I got from bob only my CA gold survived, it was slow this year but now it's getting some hight. I bet now with the experience I have with growing these plants if I get another I could probably have one flower in just over a year.woow tub spitting cause of the roots?? that doesn't sound too far fetched I can barley move the tub! the roots just take over!

if you know anyone who has a pup for sale please let me know I'd like to give it another shot!

Sage advice from a very experienced friend of mine... keep no more than two so they won't compete for nutrients. Try to have them at least 3 or 4 months apart in age. Kill the rest or give them away.

I keep cutting them and they keep coming back. How deep do you go to make a cut on new suckers?

When you feel solid resistance after pushing thru the dirt that is the connection to the mama corm. Keep going and when you feel less resistance - that's it.

Depth of the sucker depends on the variety, but regardless of that, you have to cut right up next to the mother plant or you won't kill the meristem of the pup and it'll keep coming back.

Nice pool, ugly pot.
If you want an inexpensive pot that will not split, try a closed head poly drum 30 or 55 gal. Here a used one is $5, cut it in half and have two stong pots. If someone wants a large pot buy a 275 gallon tote, cost used $40 and it has a nice ball valve for draining.
BTW, adding a plant coaster with wheels will help with moving it.

Keith ----- what industries use these poly drums and are likely to have them on hand for sale?

Many different industries use the 30/55, I prefer getting from food manufacturers.
You can buy a 275 tote that may smell like you favorite soda.

You can find them on your local craigs-list.

for example:
Food Grade 55 gal Plastic Drums (http://collegestation.craigslist.org/grd/3043673788.html)

No, this is not something sold at HD. If it was purchased new the price would not be cost effective. This drum has already served it's original purpose and now is considered a waste product with some value. These drums are everywhere don't pay a high price because it is the first one you found. This is a very durable barrel, I still use the first one I bought 15 years ago.
Keep in mind the person you are buying them from paid nothing or close to nothing for them, so buying a few should help keep the price down.
Buy a 55 gal. closed head drum if you want to make two 27 gal. pots.
A hand truck is also an easy way to move them.

I have a mat of Orinoco that I planted July 2010. I never trimmed or cut anything. Today I decided to remove some yellowing leaves and found two bunches of bananas! Of course I don't have to move mine in the Winter!
