Hi everyone! i just moved into a new apartment and the backyard is overgrown with banana plants. I was wondering if you guys could help me identify what type of banana this is? Also, any tips on clearing out these banana plants that are no longer producing fruit?

Hi Deesh,
First off, great banana pictures; thanks for posting! That fruit of that banana, being so ridged and angular, looks like the plant is an Orinoco although some more experienced growers on here can confirm this. Good dual purpose variety.
To get rid of already fruited stems you can just cut them off a few inches above the ground, and use the chopped up stem and leaves for mulch or in compost or some such.
Happy Growing! :D

Thanks for your reply! I've never grown bananas before, but now I'm intrigued.

Looks like Orinoco to me too. Great for cooking and not bad for eating out of hand.

We're in the same neighborhood! :ha: Well it is the most common banana in SoCal, owing this to its versatility and cold hardiness.
