Cut off leaves when they turn yellow. You should be shooting for a minimum of 10 functional leaves at flowering. Number of leaves at flowering is positively correlated with yield. If you are managing the bunches for quality I would remove green leaves that will touch the bunch. If not just leave it alone.

Thank you...........I didnīt know how to manage the leaves................
Like the previous post, I will cut the leaf when the petiole turns yellow (if I can reach it). If I cut it earlier, it 'bleeds' for a while; by the time it is already turning yellow, most of the sap flow has been stopped. I don't know if this makes a difference, but my thinking is that loss of the 'juice' is wasted substance that the plant may still be using.

Just to expand on what the poster asked, how many leaves at one time is it normal and ideal for a banana plant to have?

I suspect that it is variety dependent, but probably 14-15.

It is real simple: don't remove anything that is green, period.

After harvest it is common commercial practice to cut the pstem at 5 or 6 feet.
Leaving the 6 foot trunk is supposed to contribute nutrients to the overall mat as well as the pups still connected to the corm mass. When the old trunk shrivels up and collapses I cut it out.
Never dig at the corm below the surface. It's still very much alive and will generate many pups.
