Dwarf Brazillian is still my favorite and the banana I eat the most.

Ok maybe Max at 12 feet ? I case I'm missing out on a few taller and good ones.

Is this to say you do not like that taste of your Namwah and Cavendish?

I love them both randy but I want to populate my yard with more varieties. I have room for like 4 more clumps of bananas and I want to get the top varieties.

Thanks David. I have an ice cream apple and Goldfinger that I planted this year. Like you I wanted to add more in the future. I was thinking Dwarf Namwah and the Dwarf Brazilian as well.

My favorite is the Tall Red, never tasted a Dwarf Red but if it is similar it would be my first choice. Good Luck

I am wondering if Db would be a little to similar in taste to the Goldfinger that you already have? Can someone with both DB and Goldfinger chime in:lurk:

Dwarf Brazilian tastes better to me than Goldfinger, but both are very good and similar. DB is a tougher, though slower plant, in my yard. It handles cold, wind, and nutrient deficiencies better.

I have it, it tastes good, makes small bunches, small plant, nothing special.

Get rid of your Dwarf Cavendish and get something good. You can buy those in the grocery store.

This may be a little taller than you require but I like the taste of the "Manzano".

The Mysore subgroup bananas are the tastiest I've eaten. The plants tend to be tall, though Mitchel's Pisang Klotek I think is usually not more than 12' -- he could verify that. Dwarf Brazilian / Brazilian would be next in line for me, and DB fits the under 12' requirement. Manzano, like Hydroid mentioned, would probably be next for me, but there's a lot that can be as good or better, depending on what you like and how good the particular bunch is: FHIA-1, FHIA-18, various Pisang Awak varieties (Dwarf Namwah, "fake Ice Cream", "Misi Luki Awak"). And then there's hundreds of other good dessert bananas, no joke.

We have the Mysore out here in the South Pacific and they are the number one choice of the local Marshalese people, and they are pretty tasty and have a good shelf life. And they are one of the prettiest ones also, especially when they are young with a deep red color.

1.Chundillakkannan
2.Njalipoovan
3.Manzano Apple-Make sure its really ripe, not just yellow.
4.Poovan
5.Namwah
Mysure is a must have because its taste really different than the above ones...but its not my favorite.
I still have not had chance to taste many different varieties including D.brazilian, Hawaiian apple, Yangambi(Km 5), Laktan and gold finger-which may have a place on the top of the list.
In Kerala, Chundillakkannan is more famous for its taste than the budless feature of the bunch.

Try to taste a red banana before you make a decision. The color of the plant is beautiful and the fruit is the best, especially when you can choose the time to harvest. Any fruit that is similar to a Manzano stays on the plant and becomes birdfood. Some people like the taste of Manzano but many in PR prefer the other varieties. When I give away fruit the Red is always their first choice.

The Reds are beautiful. They are also very tasty, but taste is taste, and I prefer bananas with a little acidity, of which the reds have none. The other thing to consider with reds is that they hate cold weather. If you don't live in the tropics, they will be especially hit or miss.

Would one of the dwarf versions of Gros Michel fit well on this list?
I've never tasted any of the dwarf versions of GM, but I've read on here that they taste very similar to the fruit of the normal tall GM.

Thanks Mark,
I was not aware about the temperature, the biggest problem for me is they take a long time to bloom. The plants are huge but have very good wind resistance. A Dwarf Red is on my " to buy list".

Dwarf Red is a beautiful plant, and I understand the fruit flavor is identical to Tall Red, though the peel color can be a bit different. I think the long time to bloom is a universal characteristic of the Red subgroup, tall and short varieties included. The anticipation just makes it taste that much better, right? :ha:

I have often thought about that, and it could very well be true. I have enough space for 15,000 plants so I just plant more than I want.

Dwarf Red is what you want. It goes under different names, like "Dwarf Jamaican Red", but look for any combination of "dwarf" and "red". :08:

Where can we buy dwarf GM?Pitangadiego has Cocos (a dwarf GM) on his availability list (http://encantofarms.com/2012_available.html), but it seems like I read on here somewhere that he wasn't certain it's correctly identified. Some other members on here have some, but I'm not sure who all has what and where they are located (it seems like the dwarf GM's are easier to get ahold of in Hawaii and that most of the folks on here who have them live there).

My understanding is that the various Gros Michel clones are all very much tropical plants and don't even do well in S. Florida. So unless you can provide truly tropical conditions, you might want to hold off and see how all those being experimented on by those on the org fare. Or you can do the experimenting yourself!

David consider putting your growing zone in your profile. It helps to know about what your growing conditions are. For mine as an example, I did Georgia 8b to give a bit more information since 8b is so wide.

Does Red Kru's flavor is any similar to other Reds?
I'm wondering this same thing. I already have Dwarf Red, but I'm thinking about getting Red Kru as well, and I'm wondering how closely the fruit compares. Will I be able to taste a difference? Is one of them generally considered to be tastier than the other?

One thing I have found which you might find useful, is that the strain of any variety makes a huge difference. I have a Orinoco that is to die for and people here ask for the fruit. My Orito and Manzano are also delicious, but that might just be the strains/cultivars that I have. Others that are lauded I find to be disapointing. So in an ideal world if you could taste the fruit from the plant you are thinking of buying - that would be the best. Hope this helps!

I don't think there is any more reason to think that than to think the green bananas taste the same because they're green (or yellow when ripe). In fact the Green Red (which is green but nearly the same) tastes extremely similar to the Cuban Red and Dwarf Red. I think the Green Kru is supposed to taste the same as the Red Kru.

I do also have Mysore in my chácara. This is one of the best for the savannah climate and sandy soils, also relatively disease resistant. I also have Jaipira, Garantida and Preciosa in my garden, they do well. And also one unknown disease resistant cultivar from Embrapa, which is HUGE, even as huge as Saba. I also have red bananas, in Brazil named as Vinho and Roxa, probably alias names for "Red". I also have Figo, Figo is probably the alias name for Orinoco in Brazil. Also I have Prata and Maçã, these are probably alias names for Brazilian and Manzano. I will also order Goldfinger "FHIA-01", this has one alias name in Brazil, it is Maravilha, available from Embrapa. Also I have got FHIA-18 from my friend Helton, it also does well like Mysore. But my dream bananas are Thousand Fingers, Ice Cream, Praying Hands, Ele Ele, Saba, Pitogo, Kru and the other bananas, I may get them from Costa Rica. Also have Nanição, probably one alias name for Dwarf Cavendish.
Best wishes

Just had my first Raja Puri this week and would put it as among the best several bananas. Great texture. Like a cross between Dwarf Brazillian and Dwarf Namwah. Texture much like a namwah with taste similar to DB, but not as tart or apple tasting.
Have also been having my picked too soon Gros Michel finally become ripe. Also an excellent dessert banana, especially if you like regular old store bought cavendish. It was much like those but with a more complex flavor, firmer texture, and the slightest hint of tanginess. I can see why people say the cavendish varieties that replaced them years ago isn't as good.
