Long time grower in South Florida, still new to Bananas.org.

I recently acquired a Royal Hawaiian banana (variegated) which is doing fine now after a rocky start. It has put out an all green pup, as they have been known to do. I intend to grow it out.

Has anyone nurtured one of these pups to fruit? What kind of bananas do they make, and will they propagate as usual? Maybe they are known by another name and are grown as plantains?

Any information would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve

They are called A'eae and they do produce a decent dual purpose banana--for cooking or eating out of hand. They are just kind of average tasting, and a little boring like a cavendish. However, even the fruit skins are variegated, so they're about the coolest looking bananas you'll ever see. There have been some recent posts and pictures of fruiting ones.

Also, it is a myth that only Hawaiian royalty were allowed to eat this type of banana. The authors of the recent book on bananas in Hawaii found no evidence for that.

Mine pup quite well and grow quickly. My first had 8 pups, but 5 were all white. My 2nd has 6 pups, all variegated. Have yet to get an all green pup.
