I would love to start growing some banana plants. Interested in these varieties, more or less in this order: California Gold, Dwarf Namwah, Dwarf Brazilian, Dwarf Orinoco. Anyone near me have any? Many thanks!
Janet
There's a really great wholesale nursery in your neck of the woods & they have some really outstanding locally grown banana plants.
We have some fine Dwarf Orinoco & Blue Java ("real" ones) that we started off with many moons ago & with a little care to adjust to "local microclimate variations", they should do just as well in your area as up the road here in Sac.
The wholesaler's name is: Monterey Bay Nursery (http://montereybaynsy.com)
Maybe give them a call & ask for the location of your closest retailer.
The specimens they sell are usually GREAT, look like they were grown from pups & not the wimpy tissue culture you normally see. (they're stout, hefty, and very healthy)

I'm about 10 miles north of Antioch and have most of those. If you come and do some digging you can get some large plants at a good price. :)

Wow! Cool! Is this a good time to plant or replant? My husband is out that way often for work. Would we need the big truck or are the plants small enuf to put in car? Also...would we bring our own pot(s)? What size?

Janet, now is a good time to plant in the ground or in pots. I don't have them potted but you could transport them unpotted fine (it's ideal to let the cut surface of a pup dry somewhat anyways. If you need pots, I can spare a few. If you're going to plant in the ground anyways, there's no need to mess with pots. I have some plants that would be too large for most cars but would suggest pups of 2'-4' tall which would fit in a car fine. Too much stress on a large plant. I'm less than a mile south of the Rio Vista bridge on 160.

They do have nice plants. Some of them are misidentified, which is not uncommon. The "dwarf Orinoco" I bought that came from them was not a dwarf, it was a regular (tall) Orinoco.

Maybe it was one of those "Not-So-Dwarf" Orinocos! ;)

We'll have a couple Blue Java pups to spare come late fall; I see a couple trying to sneak under the fence & that neighbor already has some of our pups!
