I raise goats!

I just got my first 2 in march. A nice nanny, there in the picture, and a nice buck. Their names are Betsie and Daniel.

I had no idea that Betsie was pregnant when I got her. It was a bit of a shock when I found out a few weeks ago, by seeing a giant moving lump on her side no less. I wasn't planning to breed her until next year, but its worked out well.

Anyway, Basil, the baby goat, was born a few days ago. Iv been meaning to post these, but its that time of year when everything needs doing now..

She is just minutes old in these pictures.
Betsie decided she was going to give birth out in the far backyard, So I had to throw down paper for her.

Hope you enjoy, I will post new pictures soon..
If anyone has goats, post!

Had goats before and to us they were a royal pain, got into everything. Worse than a house cat. I guess if one is raised from a kid it would work out better but not going to find out. Good luck and more pics, might not want any but they are nice to look at. Are you going to milk her. The milk makes excellent cheese. We are doing the cattle thing and right now milking one cow and turning that into cheese.

Hi T -------------- what are you raising them for --- meat or lawn mowing?

And for those that say they don't like goat meat. You gotta try Jamaican curry goat done right.

Nice to see some people are interested..

I happen to be into, well, everything. This is just one more endeavor, meat goats.

These two aren't for eating, they're really pets, but they are the start of my herd.
They're Spanish crosses, so her udder is pretty much nonexistent. I could probably get half a gallon a day from her, but there is no sense taking that from the baby.

I raise and sell chickens at the moment. Starting to raise pastured goats too, just seems like it could go well. :)

This is just the beginning, Id like to go big with it, Goats running through the banana mats, cant go wrong..

As for the taste: the milk is a little tart to me, I don't drink milk anyway, but I think making it into cheese people will take it.

The meat on the other hand! The problem is the only goat meat most have ever had is old, 6,7,8 year old spent dairy goats! If its actually raised for meat its much younger, only a few months, and depending on how its cooked, you could mistake it for beef.

And the stereotypes of goats eating everything in sight. I haven't found it to be true. Very much the opposite, they can be very picky.

The best of all is they don't like banana leafs, they like the fruit though.

Everyone should have a few goats.

Thanks guys, I will post some new pictures.

Here are a few more pictures!

There's little Basil, shes helping clean up the corn I just removed from that area....
Shes growing fast. I had to take dozens of pictures before I got these good ones, she was running in circles making them blurry.

And this is my Billy, Daniel, I just got him weighed and he just broke 150 lbs, he was born in January....
