Hello,
I am interested in the Gros Michel family, but I am finding they are next to impossible to find. I have read in several places that the FHIA-17 and 23 are "Gros Michel" types and share the same parents. Are these "resistant" Gros Michels or a totally unrelated, but similar in characteristics, banana? According to Encanto Farms info on both FHIA hybrids, it says both are descended from "Highgate" which is the medium sized Gros Michel I believe, yet I've read on the forums here where some are saying they have no Gros Michel genetics whatsoever. Any input or advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

@GreenFin me too. Some places say they're legit improvements of Gros Michel, others say its a misnomer and that they are merely superficially similar in characteristics but not genetics:08:. Either way, I would still like to try the 17 or the 23 possibly.
@trebor that's cool! Did you all just private message him to order them? Also, would you happen to know if he still has any left??

Yes I private message him and he was quick to ship and the packaging was very good plus plants were in great shape . I only got 2 because I'm out of room. I dont know if he has any left but a message to him will give you that answer

last year I got 2 fhia 17's from different supplier and they both are doing well .
One 17 is in 100% sunlight the other is in shade half of the day .. HUGE difference in these two plants. the sunlight plant is vastly larger

@trebor Excellent! I'll have to message him then. Glad to hear your FHIA-17's are doing well. Do you happen to know if they're related in any way to the Gros Michel "Highgate" as many websites claim?

A good source, but I think only if you can pick up yourself in Honolulu, is the University of Hawaii tissue culture lab. They have many varieties including Gros Michel.

List of their cultivars: http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/UHMG/downloads/Bananas_ADSC.pdf

That's a good question, because I was told the TC came from Agristarts. Im not sure where they obtained the stock to work with . But I trust anything that comes from them . I have one PUP on my plant that gets full sun, that's kind of a big deal around here :) For me as long as I get fruit I'm happy .. Im gearing up to supply some more Organic matter to the soil around this plant. I might even take a trip the the horse farm for some nice horse poop!
