I just purchased a 2ft tall banana tree from Walmart. Other than it says "Banana Tree", there is no other info as to the type of banana it is.

I'd like to take it out of the container and plant it in the yard. I would like to get a second tree but have no idea how much space I should have between them. Suggestions appreciated!

And is there any gauge to tell me how long it would be before I can expect fruit? years?

We would need to see pictures. Plus need your location to see if it would survive outside all year long. Each type of banana fruits differently for the most part. I plant mine like 4ft apart. That way I can have more and more.

OK - I'll get a picture tomorrow. It's still in it's little plastic pot. I'm really hoping I didn't get a huge tree. Something that stays under 7 feet would be great.

I would hope that it would be fine for this zone since my local Walmart is selling them. I'm in zone 9 just north of Orlando.

If you mean 7 feet to the top of the leaves, most likely you didn't buy one that fits that bill -- very few stay that small. Even if you mean 7' to the top of the pseudostem ("trunk"), which is how banana plants are normally measured, relatively few stay that small. Most are are least a little bigger, 8-12', but many are even taller than that.

Dwarf Superplantain and Gran Nain are short plants. Even these would be more than 7' tall to the tips of the leaves.
