Hope it's ok that I post this here....I thought there might be someone who could give me some ideas! I have wanted a hammock for YEARS. Well, I have decided THIS year I'm DOING it!
I am wondering who all has hammocks, particularly the kind I'm looking for, and what companies/brands you recommend.
I would like a hammock without the spreader bars. I believe they're called a Mayan style hammock. Like a sling. That's what I'd like. And, I'd also like it family sized....big enough for maybe three.
Hammocks Rada is where I've been going to for the past few years....reading up on info, and I'd planned on buying one through them. But, with some reviews on Amazon, and the fact that I'd Emailed customer service and never received a response, I'm thinking against that....if I can't get help prior to purchase, I'm sure I won't after if it's needed.
So, if anyone has the style/size hammock I'm looking for, I'd love to get some brand names!
Thanks!
Angie
You obviously have good taste!
I used to spend a couple months thawing out in the Yucatan every winter & absolutely loved the hammocs.
One of the better places to get them was at the penitentiary right outside of Merida; (they sell them by the kilo so the playing field is levelled a little bit).
You should be able to find any number of them on ebay.
You'll probably want to splurge & go for the 100% nylon. (cotton is cooler for sleeping but nylon handles the abuse better & won't rot).
You could always make a quick run down there, maybe bring back a load of Panama hats too, while you're at it? ;)

I am on my 3rd hammock from tropical siesta. They are on ebay and have a website. I buy the cool colors..and let them kind of pick. I usually get the yellow and orange XXL. This is big enough for at least 6 if you want and they are extra comfortable. You lay more crossways in these as there are no spreader bars but that is the most comfortable. They are made in the yucatan. I have boughten 2 cotton and 1 nylon. The nylon will hold up better in the rain but is not as comfortable as the cotton. Carefull when storing my first one mice chewed holes in it so I had to buy another. Also one other tip try not to let anyone with buttons on the back of their pants or shorts sit in as they will more than likely get caught and you will have a hole or a jumbled up mess. I couldnt' be happier with these and will always make sure I have at least one hanging for the summer. I bid on mine on ebay last year I think and got it for around 80 bucks. Hope this helps Note my profile pic.. Mexican Hammock in Chetumaul..LOL
You lay more crossways in these as there are no spreader bars but that is the most comfortable.Yah, the best thing about these is a guy will actually wind up laying practically FLAT when you're in the things properly. (more on a 45° angle).
Probably more comfy than my TempurPedic even!
...try not to let anyone with buttons ......or rivets on the pockets to a lesser extent.
Watch out for the mosquito nets!
The first time I rigged mine with a "mosquitero", I messed up a bit & it acted like a trap, funnelling & keeping all the 'skeeters inside with me, where they filled up & then couldn't escape. That part was fine with me 'cuz I squashed the buggers & made a fine mess.
My buddy woke up the next morning & saw all the blood splattered inside the net & almost freaked out. ;)

Thanks for the input! I recently saw "Tropical Siesta" hammocks and they look like they are virtually the same as the Hammocks Rada ones. I am just leery to buy one from them, if they can't even answer a pre-purchase question. Their shipping charges are crazy...but they are coming from Mexico...
So, Tropical Siesta hammocks are on the top of my list of things to look into...I see they offered many of the same colors, it is also the "cool" colors I would be interested in!

narrowing that down, a guy can plug in "Yucatan" or better yet, "Mayan":

Well, I've been lookin'...and I think the Tropical Siesta family hammock will be the way I go. I'll keep doing a little research...but may be ready to order tomorrow!
I have had a very stressful week here. And knowing it was coming, I figured it was the time to buy me a hammock I've been dreaming of for so long! I have horses...and have had one for 26 years. I just had to put her down on Monday. Maybe through this, I'll learn to relax a little more...
