With all the discussion of Blue Javas being Namwahs and Apple (Manzano) being something else I am loosing confidence in what I have planted this year.

My apple and ice cream look just alike to me.

Is there a place that has bona-fide Banana plant identification information?

I found this.

Illustrated Guide to the
Identification of
Banana Varieties
in the South Pacific (http://ageconsearch.umn.edu/bitstream/118448/2/33.pdf)

Best I can tell, ice cream, apple and many others may or may not look just alike until bloom and fruit time.

All the questing about who has a real ice cream may be mute till one has fruit in hand.

My neighbor has pups that have the pink tint all the way around and said I could have one when she separates them.
They look nothing like my icecream I bought. Mine is bluish green and when misted with water the water will not stick to the leaves it rolls off like it has rainex on it. :banana_az:banana_az

That reference by Jeff Daniels is probably about the best you will find on the internet. And your assessment is right -- many can't be told apart reliably until they fruit. But you could tell Ice Cream from Apple, if you knew those were the only two possible choices. The problem is that people selling bananas often have them misidentified and your Ice Cream/Apple could be any of dozens or hundreds of varieties, not just one or the other.

I was out with my fruit and citrus trees yesterday and realized how difficult it would be to tell one peach tree from another till the fruit was fully developed. Apple and citrus trees are a little easier but still they are tough to tell apart.

25% of the fruit trees I bought from the box store were mislabled but it took a couple years growing to find that out.

Not sure why I thought bananas could be so easy to identify.
