True Misi Luki AKA Mysore?

I'm new to this too, but based on what I grow now and what I've heard, I'd probably decide this:

Pisang Ceylon (love the colors, supposedly among the best tasting bananas, and no BSV on top of that!)

Pisang Ceylon, Ice Cream Awak (I think I have this already, nice vigorous plant that makes great fruit, and lots of it)

Pisang Ceylon, Ice Cream Awak, real Ice Cream (I've always wanted to get my hands on the real Ice Cream banana...)

I would have put Gros Michel 'Cocos' for the third one, but since I'm new to this and because of my climate it's probably not worth trying in my area. If you live in the tropics, go for it.

Saba (reaches a nice height and I love the strength of the leaves)
Basjoo (ultimate cold tolerance, perfect if your a northern banana grower)
Namwah (I hear its really fast fruting and the fruit is supposed to taste amazing!)

Dwarf Brazillian-easy, quick, delicious. Never get tired of eating them daily.
A'e a'e-for its beauty
Dwarf Namwah-delicious and quite different tasting than our Hawaiian Apple

Although there are about 25 varieties I'm growing which I've yet to actually taste, so my list could certainly change. Keep us posted on what you choose to plant. At least here on the Big Island, there are maybe 10 varieties that are easy to find at nurseries.

Misi Luki, probably AKA Pisang Raja, Namwah-like fruit. 50# bunches.

Pisang Ceylon / Mysore / Poovan are tasty bananas, but smaller fruit and bunches and skinny, wind-affected trunks.

Pisang Klotek. At the rate I'm removing varieties it will be all I grow before long. A whole garden with nothing but PK!

I can't believe you guys keep pushing Saba - ok - they are statuesque and fruit heavily, but for flavour there are so many better alternatives. Now I am restricted with what I can obtain on my island, but Saba would not be on my list! Just saying....

The Misi Luki in the US isn't AKA "Pisang Raja", it is "Pisang Awak". Pisang Raja is yet a different beast.

1. Hua Moa
2. Hua Moa, Mysore
3. Hua Moa, Mysore, Goldfinger

I am a big fan of Hua Moa. I've figured out when to use it for the various plantain recipes that I cook on a regular basis.

Mysore is the best small banana that I have tasted, Nam Wah is good but I'd rather have a mysore. Mysore also doesn't have problems with Panama disease.

Goldfinger is a great variety, it taste great, and it's resistant to disease.

No question about that. I'm glad I have 5 of them, sold under 3 different names.

Awesome Nicolas..I agree on Hua Moa..first banana plant I ever acquired (1993) from Going Bananas..based on Mrs. Lessard's (Bill Lessard sold GB to Don & Katie) recommendation.

1. Hua Moa
2. Hua Moa Saba

Both can be eaten:

* fried ripe or green
* Eaten out of hand ripe
* Boiled green
* Tostones
* Awesome when microwaved for 60 seconds or so and placed on frozen yogurt (or Coconut Ice Cream for the Vegans).

Taste is discretionary...but I think a ripe Saba is as fine a tasting banana as I have ever experienced (out of 50 or so varieties....sans Fehi :-)

Keep us posted on what you choose to plant. .

I planted a Dwarf Apple in January, an Ice Cream in February, a couple of mystery Iolani Carnival bananas last month, and now I have two Dwarf Red TCs and two Sabas TC's. I thought I would ask more about peoples favorites so I can stop collecting.:08:

With roughly 1000 different banana varieties, why would you consider stopping collecting?! More is better. Just ask Pitagadiego: who needs a lawn anyway when they can have more banana plants?! :woohoonaner:

That's funny. I had to talk myself out of buying Huamoas this past week. Not once, but twice I was at the nursery with them in hand, and twice I talked myself out of buying it. It was freaking hilarious. The banana devil told me to just buy it, just buy it. The Yard Angel said, don't be a fool, I listened to the Angel. I guess I'll pick some up next week.

I haven't spent much time fooling with Saba to figure out what to do with it. I forgot the best thing about Hua Moa is the short time from flower to harvest: 60 days. That's one extra harvest per year for me. Generally I get 2 harvests per mat per year but the Hua Moa will do 3. Word of caution though, there are no more TC Hua Moas being produced so be careful as the variety is susceptible to Panama Disease.

I going to rate them based on eating quality. So far I tasted only a few varieties. (Mysure, FHIA18, Rajapuri, Hua Mua, Granain, Cavendish, Manzano Apple, Poovan, Cuban Red, Njalipoovan, Chundillakkannan, Dwarf puerto rican Plantain, Robasta, namwah, some plantains, and unknown baby banana from wall mart.)
1. Chundillakkannan
2. Chundillakkannan and Njalipoovan
3. Chundillakkannan, Njalipoovan, Manzano Apple-(I do not have them).

I normally eat plantains cooked. I tried the Hua Mua with out cooking. And that was one of the best Plantain fruit I ever eat uncooked.

Quite a few Goldfinger. How close does it taste really close to it's mother plant, Brazilians?

I haven't done enough side by side comparisons to be completely confident in my answer, but at least some times, Goldfinger tastes quite similar to Brazilian. To me, anyway.
