So I've been getting my bananas (ensette maurelii and basjoos) and cannas used to being outside on nice days. (oh...and my colocasia gigantea, and brugmansia).

It's quite a chore bringing them in and out...lemme tell ya! Think I'll leave them out tonight. The low is 50, with a high of 80 or so tomorrow. Think 50 degrees overnight is ok to just leave them all outside?

That should be fine. My plants can take temperatures in the 40s like it's nothing.

Thank you, appreciate your quick reply! I figured they should be ok. The basjoos, definitely. The maurelii, I wasn't sure, but thought it would be ok. I've just put so much work into these plants to loose them in one night due to being careless!

If I knew the weather would stay this way, I'm SO itching to plant them!!!

Night temperatures can get down into the 30s where I live and Maurelii does just fine. If you want to be safe though, you can wait a little longer, as I don't have experience overwintering plants inside like that :ha: I just know that plants already used to those lower temperatures handle it fine. Basjoo is very hardy, and Maurelii isn't particularly tender, so I don't see why they could be hurt.

I just moved a plant outdoors for the first time ever here in Kansas. I'm not so much worried about the nighttime temps (low 50's, high 40's) as I am the low humidity this time of year compared to the greenhouse environment that the plant had been growing in.

It was a vigorous Dwarf Namwah. I buried it a little over 2' deep (i.e. 2' from soil down to the top of the corm), and while the leaves are still green, they're drier now and more prone to breaking/splitting/shredding.

It will get acclimated. My plants are fine with the REALLY low humidity that we get here (a low of 5% this year so far!).

They should be fine at night - but don't let the sun burn them, it takes a couple weeks to acclimate to full sun especially 80F.

My bananas have all seen temperatures into the upper 30s this season with no problems. We also have had a lot of cool rain and they have handled all of that well. Now temperatures are warming up so they should finally be growing.
I think yours will be fine with nights in the 50s. Growth does slow down when nights are that cool, but with days in the 80s, it will definitely push out some new growth regardless.
Good luck and dont worry about the low humidity, I see plenty of nice banana plants in Cali! Just water well!

is this a newer thread?? temps here are at night now in lower 50's even mid 40's would be fine as long as there's no frost of course.

Yes, I just posted it this week. This is my second year with all of these plants....so kinda my first time with spring! (I had two basjoos last spring, babies, but that's it).

Mine are all in the ground. It was 39 for a low last night and they haven't missed a beat.

wxman, I would cause an accident in front of your place if I drove by....my attention would NOT be on the road! That is absolutely beautiful!!! Maybe I'll consider planting mine....
