Hi everyone,
I just purchased a banana plant at a local garden shop, but it was in a tray of seedlings with a sign that just read "Bananas." The larger plants actually had ID tags on them, but not the smaller ones. I am some what familiar with bananas, but I've totally drawn a blank as to what this might be. The only distinction I could make was half were short and stocky with blotches of red and the other half like the one I bought were much taller and more vigorous looking--no red either except for a red streak in the midrib. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Banana Gallery - andy17 Gallery (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=13217)

Generally speaking a plant that small is too young to ID properly, but I am going to guess that it is Musa basjoo. However, keeping posting photos as it develops and we can better tell for sure.

It seems that the red midrib is pretty prominent and there is also some red coloration on the pseudo stem (just a little, but noticeable). I've noticed that there are several varieties of banana that have this coloration including Basjoo. Could it possibly be a dwarf red, green red or mona lisa as well? I'll have uploaded a new pic to my gallery: Banana Gallery - Mystery Banana (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=48890&cat=500&ppuser=13217)The petioles seem to be pretty green, only the top and bottom (underside of leaf) of the midrib and blotches on the pseudo stem have that purplish red coloration. I know it's really early to tell, I'm just throwing around some ideas. Thanks!
