I think you should plant them on the ground in full or part sun as soon as possible..so it could get big and strong before the winter.

Tony,
I have had two mats in the ground for six years. One in full sun and one in partial sun. The full sun plants have done much better for me. See my post my AeAe is flowering. It is much warmer where you live compared to me in SB. Plant it!

The p-stem on it is only about 8". My idea was to grow it in a pot in a protected area to keep it looking it's best. Any banana I've grown under cover has been more lush, holds more leaves has better color,no sunburn and no shredded leaves. When it gets too big for the patio I'll plant it in-ground

Just make sure you reserve a spot for it instead of planting something else (Passiflora???) in it's special spot.

Mine is in the ground too, and Tony is right that it looks so much better when protected from sun and wind, but the others are right that it grows fast and becomes less fussy in the ground. Mine just survived a second winter in the ground and is putting new leaves out now. It's mostly the wind here that makes it look less than perfect. Of all my variegated bananas, it has been the slowest to pup, but I finally have about five pups around it now. One of them is large enough to sell now. If anyone is interested, send me a pm.

Luc, I know people who have grown quite a few Ae Ae and every pup has been variegated. One person who I bought two pups from a few years ago said they had never seen a solid green pup. I know that some people have reported a green pup but I think the ratio you're talking about is an exaggeration.

Thanks Harvey ,
Now I am gonna need some advise planting this , the root ball has a big wound on 2 sides , should i let these dry out for a few days ?
In planting regular bananas we plant them very deep including at least 20 cm of the stem under the ground , shall I do the same with this one ? What about watering ?
I really don't wanna take risks with this baby.
Thank you all.

I've not grown one of these by a corm but it's always been suggested to let the surfaces of any corm to dry before planting and I think you're right to do that. The couple of plants of other varieties I grew from a corm has been a few years ago but I didn't plant those very deep but I don't know that is right or not. I think with your very warm conditions it should do well for you. It's quite a large corm with a lot of stored energy. It generally should not be watered until it shows some growth though you obviously don't want the soil to dry out completely. Plant it after your storm has passed and toast with some tequila. :)

I agree with everyone that a solid green pup is rare; although, I do get a few on my Thai variegated bananas, but the majority are variegated to some degree or another.
However, I have an AeAe in the ground now, and it is just starting to flower, and there are five pups around it, and four of them, which are still small, look like they have a lot of white and are variegated; however, the biggest one looks very green and only has a hint of variegation. I had planned to sell all of my pups, but I'm not going to sell this green one as I think it would be a disappointment to someone. I'm not sure if I should cut it off at this point.
Here are some pictures of the AeAe, the variegated pups, and the mostly green pup:

Tony ------- It would good to start preparing the ground where the Ae is going in. Don't do like I did. My pH wasn't low enough and the 2 Ae Ae mats have been struggling to get to flower stage before the end of season. Two and a half years now and still no fruit. However, I expect the big one will make it this year due to several topdressings of sulfur over time.
You could dig out the hole and fill in with peat moss mixed at 50%, and mix granular sulfur in the fill to give it time to break down. South Cali soils are generally alkaline, right?
I remember Jon saying he potted his with 100% peatmoss and they did well.

The best looking Ae Ae mat I've seen in So Cal is Andy's (BadPun) here in Ventura. He amended that bed like crazy, though I don't recall everything that he did. He also sort of treats the mat like a compost pile, piling on dead leaves, veggie scraps, etc., so there is lots of organic matter for those bananas. His Ae Ae are really big and very productive.

From what I've seen, you can place any banana in full shade, but they just won't grow as fast as if they had more sun. By not as fast, I mean some will grow incredibly slowly compared to their counterparts in full sun. I think there are some that might do best in dappled shade, like Ae Ae because the white parts of the foliage are less likely to burn. That said, they seem to do fine in full sun, at least in some climates.

For a long time I had a hard time understanding all the hype surrounding the AeAe. The pics that I saw on here all made them look no more special than a straggly long leafed hosta on a trunk. Then I saw a breathtaking clump in the greenhouse at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens: completely perfect leaves with beautiful varigation on about seven large plants surrounded by many perfect pups - and so many amazing and appetizing fruit bunches! Tony from your most recent pic it seems you are on you way to a similar outstanding specimen - Congrats!!

No picture can rely their actual beauty. I have 3 plants (actually 2 and one I bought for my mother) and each one has thier differences. They took a little beating a few days ago with the crummy wind/rainstorm we had here. But they even look nice with battered leaves.

Sunfish,
Do you happen to have any of these ae ae banana pups for sale or trade? I'm one of the bigger bamboo collectors around, and I like the look of the variagated leaves on this guy. I know I probably can't get it too big in zone 6, but it still works well as a nice potted show plant.
I do have some of the rarer bamboos around.

No.Sorry.Only a couple small pups on this one. Probably won't be large enough to remove until next year

That's fine because I still need to wait until next summer to get divisions off my rare species of bamboo.
I'm just hoping that I have enough skill to keep one of these guys alive as I've had a hard time over-wintering bananas other than musa basjoo in the past, but I'm armed with a 400 watt metal halide:goteam:
I happen to have phyllostachys prominens, shanghai III, and moso bicolor bamboos, and intend to collect more rare species, or get seedlings to produce mutations in the future, but just for fun, I like collecting other plants too.

Tony, Nice specimen. My mom killed the AeAe you gave me when I was away, but I have one solid green pup from it. I'm going to let it grow.
I don't intend to beat a dead horse as to whether or not the "Florida" variety is just an AeAe or not, but this is one I got from Thailand. Does it look like an AeAe to you? The picture doesn't show it well, but smaller leaf and the petioles are edged with bright pink.

how well did that work buying from Thailand? There are a few types over there I would like to have but I have gotten alot of negative feedback about it, shipping bald corms and 2 weeks in the mail usually dosen't end up well.

I don't understand where the negative feedback comes from. I have received Bananas from Bkinterplants, Thailandplant, and atgtree on ebay and they all survived and did well. I got this "Florida" AeAe from Bkinterplants. He always sends large corms with proper phytosanitary certificates through EMS express mail (3-4 days plus a couple days for customs). They take a while to come out of dormancy sometimes, but they always do well for me. Make sure you clean off all the fungicide, soak the corms in water, and dust with rooting hormone if bald. For some reason west coast customs likes to confiscate Plumeria, but they have never taken my bananas. $50-55 shipping may seem expensive But considering the cost of express shipping and the certificate as well, I think it's reasonable. Just make sure they include the phytosanitary inspection, this is important to ensure the plants are not diseased and confiscated.

the negative usually come from the bald corms I think. Takes a bit more work to get them going and sometimes they don't make it after the very slow start. BK has a few id like to have as well as ATG. the prices re about the same as in the US but that shipping does hold me back. If they could just do a little better say 35 id jump on it I think.

I searched future and it looks like the Florida variegated is not the same as AE AE and is not seeded.

What I gather from that thread is that AeAe has rounded tip fruit and Florida fruit has a nub on the tip. One of my two "florida" pups just developed a half white leaf like the thread mentioned as well. Perhaps we can trade a pup so we each have one strain growing next to the other. It will increase the chances of one of us getting fruit from each one.

If it had seeds, they would not produce variegated seedlings, as with any other chimera variegated plant. Typically any plant with no pattern or symmetry to the variegation are chimera (mutated and non-mutated tissue coexisting in one plant to create a random marbling effect) and will not come true from seed except on rare occasion. Look at morelli for an example of genetic rather than chimera variegation. It is not a chimera like AeAe or Florida. Each leaf has a virtually identical, predictable and symmetrical variegation pattern that is genetic and will be passed on to it's seedlings.
