I have just received three new banana plants; dwarf red, ice cream and orinocco. I live in Colorado and was wondering what is the largest size of container I will end up putting them in when they are full grown? Is it even possible to put these banana plants in containers when they are full grown? I need to put them in containers for the most part to take them in over winter. The summers here are hot (in the 100's) so they will put on good growth. I dont want to risk mulching them over winter. Any advice?

Does width or depth of the container matter? Would it be better to go with a garbage bin (deep) or storage container?

I believe wide is better than deep

Thanks for all the advice. Does anyone know of anyone who had grown a full-size (12ft) banana plant in a container? Ha, I'm just thinking how funny it'll look to have a palm in Colorado peeking over the fence!

For 4 years I've grown bajoo (about 15 ft high) , dwarf red cavandish (4 to 6 ft high) in containers (cone shaped) about 28" high and 28 " across. I try to get hold of pots with wide tops) Last year they looked absolutely great but they now need to be re-potted and babies need new homes. I over-winter them in the same containers in anything from 50F to 80F- depending on whether they are kept under plastic outside, the cabin or the main house.
For the last year I've grown an altogether different banana in an ordinary black pot (because that was all I had at the time) about 16" high and 18" across. It looks fine - 15 ft tall and is suppose to grow to 30 ft tall but I want to move it to a much bigger pot.
For soil I mix the best soil possible - worm castings (10%), fast draining pro mix, lots of compost and leaf mold plus well broken down hemlock mulch to aid in drainage, and some really good potting soil. Once the bananas are re-potted I cover the soil with about 1" of sand so I do not have to deal with little insects that spend part of their life in the soil.

If i would be growing the banana than i would have chosen the bigger container as possible as the banana plants get bigger as they grow and need more space than the other plants.
