Hello banana lovers,
I am from Anaheim, CA, and have been lurking on this forum for several months trying to learn as much as possible about bananas. I picked up my first banana plant at Home Depot last summer or fall(can't remember) when I was looking for any type super dwarf fruit trees that could be grown in a pot. Now I have decided to expand and recently acquired a super dwarf Cavendish, another DC, and a dwarf Brazilian. I am also supposed to be getting a California Gold next week, but we'll see (the supplier messed up my order last time but says he will send it when available). I look forward to continue in the learning process, and fun, of the banana world. And, yes, my family is sure that I am literally "bananas."

Welcome! :08:

Many of us believe that "California Gold" is just Dwarf Orinoco being sold at an exorbitant price.

I've seen not seen many people make such a claim and don't recall anybody who has actually grown both make such a claim. Probably the most accurate statement on the matter is in Gabe's post here:
Morphologically, it is very easy to tell that 'California Gold' is a dwarf type of Bluggoe, as is the common 'Dwarf Orinoco'. Just by looking at them at any stage you are not likely to be able to tell them apart. However, the claim of 'California Gold' and what makes it different has nothing to do with morphology, it is it's growth habit, which you cannot tell from morphology. It is my belief that if the two are different at all, it is just in cold tolerance and/or speed of growth and that 'California Gold' is a hardier/faster sport off the common 'Dwarf Orinoco'.

The high prices have been established by buyers, mostly in eBay auctions. One eBay seller has been selling tissue culture plants of something other than California Gold and selling them as such and those have been pretty cheap. I've sold one California Gold to a forum member who solicited a pup and offered $100. I thought that was too high so I threw in free shipping. ;) If someone would come by and dig up the pup themselves, I'd sell them a large pup for a very reasonable price.

Well, if that is the case, I guess I can stand a Dwarf Orinoco, since it's all new to me.

I don't think Anaheim gets cold enough to justify growing California Gold. I'd get a Psiang Klotek from Bananas.org - View Profile: momoese (http://www.bananas.org/member-momoese.html) or maybe a Monthan.

But if you decide you want a California Gold, drive on up to Sacramento County and you can dig up your own large pup for $25. :P

Free place to park your tent with choice of views, wide open spaces or river's edge. Exercise is good for you. ;)
