I've been doing some reading about bananas sold commercially and they're all the cavendish variety. What is the difference between a Gran Nain and a DC? Is the DC the same plant, just a smaller one?

DC and Gran Nain are both in the Cavendish subgroup. I think DC is a little shorter and the fruit it makes has a thinner peel. They should taste pretty much the same.

I believe Gran Nain is also a more colorful plant

That's true about typical supermarket banana fruit sold in the U.S. -- but some supermarkets carry other types imported from Mexico, etc.
For fruiting banana plants, it is not the case -- especially since most home growers consider the Cavendish fruit less than desirable.

Where I live the most common home grown variety is Orinoco.

Also I bought some Oritos at a fruit market yesterday. Best bananas I've ever had.
