Hi everyone.
I always put the cart before the horse. Received a huge banana plant yesterday and have no idea about planting bananas. I need to plant it in a container since I live in Akron Ohio. it seems that a good soil mixture is 1/3 perlite/1/3 miracle grow and 1/3 peat moss. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
battled with container figs for 4 years and finally looks like I will have fruit this year. I have uploaded pictures in my galary of the banana stalk I received and my fig tree in a container but not sure how to get there yet.
Welcome. I am just north of Columbus here.
Promix hp is a good soil for this area if you can actually find it.
When useing MG I personally tend to go a little heavier on the perlite myself and avoid anything that says the words "moisture control" on the bag. Yes I have to water a little more often in the summer but it seems to helps avoid rot when you move it inside for the winter or if we have a stretch of rainy days. Gotta love Ohio weather.

Thanks what do you do in the winter when you bring it inside. I have read and seen some video where they cut the whole plant of at the base? Ouch!!
I bring my inside to the basement and put them under a set of grow lights. You have to be very careful not to water them too much or they rot. This was the first year I did it this way and they did not grow but the pstem is intact and healthy on all three.

Hi and welcome to the site. =) I had a Cavendish banana plant and i didn't let it get colder than 50*F at night. It was healthy but ants were in the pot and killed it before spring. I opened my Wordpad plant file and 10-5-15 or 20-5-30 fertilizers are good for banana plants. i used Gro More 20-5-30 for mine but they said to not fertilize it in the winter cuz it grows too slow and too much can burn it.
Mites are a problem in the winter too and i mixed soapy water and canola oil and sprayed it on my banana plant and pepper plants and that stopped the mites.
