I pulled off a outer layer of the pstem and noticed that there was a small rot spot. How can I stop this and save my plant?

Hi, I know what you're going through! I've been through much, much worse.
1. Make sure to water the naner regularly- irregularity lowers its defenses.
2. Give it lots of sunshine or light. The more light the better, especially in Zone 6.
3. Q-tip the spot with peroxide couple of times.
4. If in a few days it progresses- take a sharp blade and remove the spot. I have several naners with pretty serious surgeries, large and deep cuts and they survived and even kept the most damaged leaf for a very long time!
Good luck!
Alex.

You can get wettable dusting sulfur that's about 90% pure elemental sulfur from any good farm supply store cheap. Some rot it kills; some it does not. It will repel some insects but not kill them. Watching the drainage/irrigation and using sulfur has worked for me.
