Hello all,
I have a few loquats but have some room for more. I have some rootstock and could graft if I could find some scion wood but I am really in the market for some growing trees or grafted varieties. I have big Jim, adVance or champagne (memory fails) and yehuda.
Are there any nurseries with other cultivars?
Any help would be appreciated.

Keith, I don't know of anybody offering varieties in the U.S. other than those you've listed, besides Arboreum : Bareroot Fruit Trees (http://www.arboreum.biz/) but they don't list loquats on their web site. They have sold grafted loquat trees of quite a few varieties at various plant events in northern California. I bought an Argelina from them. There is an article about some of their varieties at http://www.crfg.org/chapters/santa_clara/FruitLeafSepOct09.pdf
His prices are pretty high. I paid $35 for my 5 gallon tree a few months ago. I have no idea if he'd be willing to sell scions or not. Maybe Lisa Stapleton, who wrote that article and had purchased 3 varieties from Patrick in 2009, might be willing to sell you some scions. Her email address is on page 1 of the newsletter.

By the way, Ken Love of Hawaii sent material of many different varieties to the USDA repository in Davis, CA several years ago. The former curator there was interested in them but it wasn't officially a species in their collection. I saw them at least once during my visits there and I think I was told they were unsure what was going to be done with them. Several of them had fireblight even though I've never seen fireblight on my trees or others in yards, etc. but a friend of mine told me he has had problem with fireblight in loquats.

After a hurricane one died and the other remained sickly and would not grow and seems to have disappeared. They were in a pear orchard that from time to time does get fireblight so it is possible that along with being weakened by storms they became suceptible to fireblight. The other 4 loquats at other locations on my 8 acres show no sign of illness.

Yes I don't think I would buy anything from them.Something seems fishy
I've got bunches of Loquat seedlings available for adoption here but don't have a clue as to what cultivar they are.
The "source tree" is going to have one heck of a bumper crop this year, can't wait to start spitting seeds!!!
From all accounts from folks that have been getting seedlings from us over the years they have all been true to the original's flavor.

I have one left...and is not very hardy...
How do you enjoy these things, like cherries in a bowl? Or like a pear?

like cherries in a bowl
I eat 'em right off the tree, like a squirrel!
:lurk:
They don't keep very long unless a little piece of the stem is left on & then they don't last more than a couple-few days.
Actually, they're probably closer to small plums in size & "style of eating".

my survivor is really puny...i'll give it the rainy season to get going...or it's nixville and I'll plant a new tree of some type.
My Malay Apple is very happy but my Custard Apple grows leaves and just one fruit in 4 years...having very good luck grafting selected citrus on old rootstock that had failed grafts.
Avocados in 2 varieties in bloom now and 6 different mango types getting started...gotta stop buying young trees and then the frequent irrigation might permit more time with the umbrella drinks on the veranda!

I believe they are the same as TY TY
Does anybody know what cultivars were available in the US over 50 years ago?
Wild guesses, anybody?
update: someone was nice enough to turn me on to an old book, circa 1963, titled "A History of Subtropical Fruits and Nuts in California".
It's available for download from: http://websites.lib.ucr.edu/agnic/butterfield/butterfield.pdf
It's about 15MB in size & a very informative read. (for California folks, at least).

OUCH!
$65.00 for Big Jim. I can stomach that.
$38.45 for shipping.
I think I reached my pain level.
I hope I can get some budwood or grafting stock.

My one experience with Ty Ty was not good. Their plants are tiny, extremely expensive, and have poor survival. I also got chased back to my truck by their loose pit bull. Only buy from them as a last resort and be aware that what you buy could well not survive.
Buy from anyone else first. There is a I think an Aarons something or other that seems to be an offshoot from them. Since they are so similar I would also beware of them too.

I am amazed that the TyTy/Aaron's people can remain in business. The internet is littered with tales of their poor service.
I ordered from them years ago and was less than happy. In the end the twigs they sent me did survive, but it was a lot longer before they were the blueberry bushes I had ordered.
Anyway, back to loquats. Let me know if there are other places to list.

They are supposed to be former disgruntled employees of TyTy at least one of whom did webpage work for them. There is supposed to be an internet and legal battle of between them now. On the ranking page for davesgarde there a lot of negative comments Could be ringers sent in by TyTy. I check for the source of the Perdue Pear that attracted my attention to Willis Orchard and saw

I checked the TyTy webpage and TyTy does not sell the Perdue pear. So this suggests that the two are truly separate. In order to buy in person one has IIRC purchase $200 minimal order and I will see if they have enough to interest me in a $200 minimal order to make it worth while for me. I can hit them and also Just Fruits and Exotics which is not so very far away and not burn too much extra gasoline. Reason for going in person is to make sure that they are not a TyTy ripoff. I am also interested in the Willis loquats and also their cherry cultivars. They also have a good selection of nut trees and apricots. Just Fruits and Willis do not offer exactly the same things and so it could worth my while to pass by both of them.

I think it is an excellent idea. If we are there in person it should be difficult to be taken advantage of. Willis doesn't have a great rep BUT I think it should be worth the trip especially since it is close to JF&E. I definately need some items from there. Here is the scoop from DG. "Willis Orchard Company has 289 reviews (143 negative, 128 positive and 18 neutral) at the Garden Watchdog"

We could do a cumulative buy of $200.00 and that would help too!
Should be a good trip. Let's do it.

The trouble with the reviews is that their former employer at Ty Ty could be sending in the negative reviews. Darkman I am sure we will work something out. You have to have an appointment also to buy from them on site which is made over the phone.

Keith that sounds good. When I (actually SBL came over and gave me a crash course in grafting) grafted the scion wood you sent me I took the trimmings off the seedlings and I am trying to root them. I should have plenty if they all take.
I haven't heard of any "superior" rootstock for Loquats so the rooted cuttings are probably better than a grafted one IMHO.
Thanks again.
PS Still loooking for BIG JIM scions if anyone has any.

Does anyone have any updates on whether you got what you purchased from Willis Orchard? Were they seed grown, grafted, or cuttings?
