I think that it would be an interesting thing to do.

I wonder what the size of those ARH's would be???
Hmm!!! Try it, let us see! :) ~Cheryl

We grow for the end product. Stopping the growth of the fruit seems to be a waste to us, but that is just our opinion. If you are looking for larger fruit then it might be wise to find something that would enhance the growth of the fruit, growth regulators. We know that they work with tomatoes so it might be possible to find what you need to accomplish larger fruit. Keep us informed as any experiment is interesting. Thanks

Are you interested in seeing what the result would be of an ARH, if trimmed back to one finger. I have a slight interest in this and would do it to one plant if there were others interested in the outcome. To be perfectly honest I would consider trying almost any experiment, ideas welcomed.
ARH *-African Rhino Horn correct just want to be sure we are on same plant :)
I almost bought one a few days ago but when I though of 20' high plant I got a Dwarf Red instead..
But if your saying you will remove all fruit from one hand leaving only one single fruit. But leave the remaining hands to grow I don't think to much will happen .. If you were to remove all the fruits on one complete bloom leaving one single finger/fruit that might prove interesting .. But genetically it will or should only get as big as allowed in past blooming's in that corm. Nicolas Naranja “Muck Bananas” trimmed a few hands of some of his Williams (I think) and he got full sized fruits . Or he improved the length of those fruits buy cutting off a few hands .. I suppose that plant just placed all the extra energy in the lesser amount of hands and they got a little larger..
But either way what ever you do will be appreciated , interesting and welcomed

I'm interested, but I will say that for maximum effect the the pruning must occur shortly after the last hand has emerged. I mean obviously there is a finite limit to the size of the fruit, but from my experience I get much thicker and longer fruit from bunch pruning. It's actually been across the board now Gran Nain, Dwarf Superplantain, and Dwarf Namwah

I think it is well known and established through proper, controlled, replicated experiments, that pruning off some hands or fingers of bananas from a bunch gives you bigger fruit on average. Moreover, if the pruning is not too severe, it barely affects the total weight of fruit produced per bunch, you just get fewer, bigger fruit, like Nick was describing. Proper nutrition (fert.) definitely helps, but there only so much photosynthesis a plant can do to produce fruit, which will set the upper limit for bunch weight, if I understand correctly.

That's great advice Nick, do you think I should do it before it opens?
No, just do it after the last hand is open. Try to get to it before the bract rolls all the way back.
