Haha! here in the Dominican Republic they sell machetes in the supermarkets. Check shopping list
milk - yep
bread - yep
machete - yep!!!
Coming from the UK where it is an offense to carry a knife with a 4 inch blade - this was quite an eye-opener.

The indiginous people of Norway (Saami) have something similar, but it's more of a regular knife with a massive blade. I had one when I was in the military, but I lost it somewhere in the norwegian wilderness. Probably good for butchering reindeer, but overkill to chop a few banana-leaves.
I think I am getting one of these latin machetes, so my neighbors can point and laugh while I slice a few musa basjoos, Rambo-style!

Mine is the latin style machete with only an 18 inch blade - suitable for girls to use! haha! But amazingly useful and stays sharp too. I have just finished using a 60lb bunch (of cavendish I think) of bananas and will get help later today to cut the old plant down, another bunch due to be cut at the end of this week. Without machetes we would disappear under a mat of green.

I have been using a hand saw for most of the work with the banana plants. I have about 250 banana plants so I think I really could put a machete to good use!
