Are these for real and is Pisang Tanduk essentially what we refer to as African Rhino Horn. Look at the size of those plantains.

That's just a good photo angle -- I bet those bananas are no bigger than your average plantain. Every fisherman knows how to do that. Put the fish (or banana) in the foreground and the person in the background and get really close to the fish (or banana) when shooting the photo. :ha:

A document I have on SE Asian banana names lists Pisang Tanduk as a synonym for Horn, Macho, and Cuerno.

There are other pictures where they are as big and long as a person's forearm.

Which person's forearm? ;)

Keep in mind, that:
a) these bananas are close to the camera, which makes them appear larger
b) Malaysian women are a bit smaller than North American ones

Having said that, these pictures seem to bear out, that their size is for real. :)

I think that is a woman's arm.

I don't know if African Rhino Horn is the same banana as Pisang Tanduk, but I have read that at 22" in average length (when grown in tropics) A.R.H. is not the largest fruiting of the plantains.

If she's a child she got married early --- wedding band?

Talking about big plantains. We have a Bravo supermarket near me and green plantains sell by the count. So people sort thru them for the biggest plantains. Don't get in the way of those old ladies when they are digging thru the cases. They get mad if you are close to their digging foray.

My mom told me that Bravo was selling plantains at 8/$1 recently. That's what you call a loss leader. At the terminal market in Miami they are selling boxes of 65-75 for $16.

Those are some big bananas. Nick, I hope you don't think I was poking fun at you. I just find the camera angles tricks very amusing -- having been a fisherman all of my life. I know my friends would use those tricks, but never me. ;)

I recall seeing two photos / videos of bananas that just blew me away by their size. One was a Huamoa about the size of a football and the other was an Rhino Horn that was every bit as long as a large man's forearm.

I never thought I was being made fun of. My biggest Hua Moa was about as long as 20 oz water bottle and a little wider. I had a foot long plantain this week. I wish I could get a stalk full of Hua Moas like that.
