A couple of nights ago I noticed that the SDC I adopted from Northern Tropics 5 weeks ago (see my avatar) had launched its first pup! This was my first pup ever, so I was pretty excited. :08:

When I went out with my camera the next day to take a picture, I noticed a 2nd pup coming up on the opposite side of the same plant, as you can see in the pic below (1st pup to left of plant, 2nd to right): :08::08:

Well, when I loaded that pic up on my computer and looked at it closely, it seemed like there might be a 3rd pup coming up near the 2nd pup (just a couple of inches toward the bottom of the pic from the 2nd). So I went outside and checked, and sure enough there was indeed a 3rd pup! :08::08::08:

My plot to cover every square inch of the Earth with bananas will soon be complete!

I remember when one of my plants launched its first pup. I first noticed it when I was still around an inch underground. Funny thing is, it has barely even grown.

Congratulations on your pups! My DC produced seven pups. I'm now trying to unload banana plants on my neighboors. No luck yet. I don't want to compost them since they were good enough to grow for me. Soon you will be wondering what to do with all your nanner plants.

Yesterday I separated my first pup :) :birthdaynana:

The mother plant's growth had slowed significantly since sprouting the 3 pups, and for good reason: while the above-ground portion of the SDC pups hadn't exactly been skyrocketing, the roots had gone bonkers. The pup I cut off was only about 2 inches tall, but it had a dense root mass bigger than a softball with great big white carrots (i.e. roots) coming out the sides. It was almost unbelievable; I had to dig a 7" diameter hole just to fit the roots down. It was how big I would have expected the mother plant's roots to have been. I really should have taken a picture, but I didn't think to until after I had already replanted it. Next time.

I only moved it about a foot, just enough to give it its own little growing space where I can watch it do its thing. I'm interested in seeing the conversion from sword sucker to independent plant. I'm also interested in seeing how fast it grows in comparison to the Truly Tiny that I got as a 2" tall tc plant with almost no roots. That Truly Tiny exploded in my environment; hopefully this SDC pup will grow even faster thanks to the massive supercharger it's got under its hood.

I can only imagine how big the corm is on the two pups coming off of my unknown plant. They have been sitting there for months doing nothing (probably building up root mass) and suddenly they explode in growth! I can literally check on them once and then check on them again a few hours later to see that they've grown since then!

I decided to separate another pup today and plant it outside for comparison to the one I left inside. This pup was younger and much smaller than the first pup I removed, but at least I took some pics this time.

Here it is on the lid of a 5 gallon bucket (when I say that the other pup's corm and root system were drastically bigger than this one's, these pics should help convey what I was talking about--imagine this guy with a softball potato under it and with more and bigger white roots):

And here's the corm in the corn patch, so to speak (I put it in a little irrigation channel that leads from my aquaponics system into the corn):
