Guys, I've had luck jump starting my naners by taking off my tarp and covering them with clear plastic to create a "greenhouse effect", and its even gonna be earlier this year than last....gonna do it 3/11...pics will be posted!! btw...SE Ohio here....any bets on a frost in September this year??

I've found the leaves to be semi-hardy in the spring when they are just unfolding so they can handle a little bit of frost. I took mine off about a week ago and with most days getting into the 70s, leaves are trying to unroll.

thanks for discussion on this..my 3 clumps are still safely wrapped..
but with the "warmish" weather ive been tempted to uncover them..
good idea ..wilson.. i may do similar..just make a temp greenhouse
over them too..
i think i'll wait for couple more weeks though..
our nites still hitting some high 20sF ..thats a bit chilly still..
?? think when nites stay in mid 30sF its safe to uncover??
much thanks...

When they haven't developed full leaves yet, I think they are hardy to around 29F without getting burned, but mid 20s is a little bit too cold for basjoo.
Based on my weather station sensor in the set over-wintered banana set up, it dropped as low as 24F as well protected as it was so it seems like mid 20s won't kill the corm, but it can probably burn out the uncurling leaves. If it does happen to drop below freezing, I have plenty of frost cloth in hand.

hey wilson, how cold does it get during winter where you are? i was looking at your plants with the chicken wire and the noodles :) and wondering if ours would be safe to winterize that way.
