I've had a lot of bananas fruiting lately, here are two of them.

'Highgate', a dwarf Gros Michel, fruting at just about 11 months after planting. It is shorter than 'Cocos', but the fruit is also smaller. Pseudostem height on this is about 7ft.

This is 'Cocos', a different cultivar of dwarf Gros Michel, the fruit is larger than 'Highgate' and the plants a little taller for the first round of fruiting, but if you really juice them they will get taller with age. Currently they are fruiting at about 7-8ft right now.

Very cool! How are these dwarfs with BBTV? I've learned to manage it with Brazilians ... but gave up on others.

I working on putting them to the test on a larger scale, but so far, no BBTV after about 3 years of growing with infected plants around.

Looking good, Gabe!

Is 11 months after planting typical, or was there something that affected the plant to bloom time?

It is typical given that the plants are in full sun, are adequately watered, and have enough nutrients.

How big was it when it was planted? (big pup or young tc?)

And a great big green thumb watching them. Thanks

I have a Gros Michel, but wasn't told if it's a standard giant size or cocos or highgate. I assume it's standard, but are there any differences to look for between the three Thanks.

'Highgate' has a very noticeable dwarfed stature, it's a relatively thick and stout plant.

'Cocos' is more slender and less dwarf looking, and can look very similar to the tall 'Gros Michel' for a time when young, but it will eventually start to look more proportional and top out in height when shorter as opposed to the tall which get very tall, and will not look dwarf at all and not really top out until near 15-20ft.

I would assume you have a standard tall 'Gros Michel' as they are the most common and quite abundant. Where did you get it from?

Gabe, thank you. I will keep my eye on it. I got it from Amazon, and SDDarkman said he is the only seller of GM on there, so I assume it was him. I have asked but not heard back yet. It is about 4 feet tall now. Please take a look to see if you can tell... (So you know, I overfed this with K a few months ago and it is just recently starting to grow normal again. It's growth nearly stopped for about July...)

Looks like the normal tall to me so far.

I would prefer the Cocos simply for faster fruiting and less worries over the wind. Anybody have one? I can trade a Dwarf red or a huge Namwah corm.
Thanks, Gabe...

All things being equal, the dwarfs don't really fruit faster, they just don't add as much height with each new leaf, but are more or less equal in time. They are less prone to wind damage, but since they all have fairly large bunches staking is advised for all of them.

I thought I would resurrect this old thread. Now that Highgate is available as tissue culture, who has tasted it? Gabe since you have tasted Gros Michel, Coco's and Highgate do they taste the same? Does one taste better? Thanks, for any info.
