Hello All,
My name is Amit and I am from India (Kolkata). I am a software professional but have interests in horticulture / floriculture as well. Especially in the HiTech areas of these fields such as growing flowers / vegetables in controlled conditions, plant biotechnology etc. As I am trying to self educate myself from various sources any help would be most appreciated. In this regard I am interested in doing tissue culture of banana at home and am looking for information for an absolute beginner on this topic. Hope to hear from you...
Regards,
Amit

Hi ab2710:
From Kolkata, West Bengal, India. I had to looked up Kolkata to see where you are from since india is a big place and I am very ignorant of its geography. Can you describe your climate a bit and your elevation. I wonder if it is similar to Miami, FL. I can see that you likely get tropical cyclones that are called hurricanes in the US of A. I assume you get a lot of rain also.
Best wishes,

Hi Barnetmill,
Sorry for the delayed response.
Kolkata (previously known as Calcutta) is in the eastern part of India. Latitude: 22°34′10.92″N Longitude: 88°22′10.92″E. The climate here is known to be tropical wet and dry. Summer is very hot and humid (say 24 deg Cent to 40 degree Cent). Humidity is the main problem. Extremely sweaty throughout summer and monsoon. During the onset of summer we have some spells of dusty squalls followed by thunderstorms and heavy rains. Just lasts for a few hours bringing down the temp a bit. Not the type of cyclones u get in America. Monsoon lasts for 3 months and extremly humid and sweaty. I wouldnt say it rains very heavily. Winter from November to end Jan is pleasant (average 12 dec C ~ 27 deg C). Drops below 10 deg Cent sometimes. It is close to the sea..around 100 miles and and I guess at sea level. However with global warming / environmental changes things r changing...winters are not cold enuf....not raining enuf in monsoons....summer getting hotter etc...
By the way, I have been to Florida and worked there for a while (close to Miamy and Ft Lauderdale) . Lovely place. Florida is much more dry than here though.
Regards,
Amit
