Our very own "The Opinionated Gardner of Coral Gables", Jordan Steele jnstropic (http://www.bananas.org/member.php?u=253) , and I have decided to come up with a contest for a free Ae Ae plant!
It should be a lot of fun and we're encouraging everyone to join it!
Here's how it goes.
Guess the ripening date of this bunch of Ae Ae fruits.
As seen Jan 14, 2007 -
http://togofcoralgables.com/images/450114072.jpg
To see the progression of the bunch, for more photos in the series, you must visit this link (scroll to the bottom of the page):
http://togofcoralgables.com/AeAebananas.aspx
The person who guesses the right date, or if the exact date was not chosen, the person who came the closest will win.
Only one entry per date, and one entry per member.
If there is a tie (if nobody picked the right date but two people picked the two surrounding dates), the person who guessed the day BEFORE the actual date will win, for example, if the bunch ripenes on the 20th and there were guesses for the 19th and another for the 21st, the person who guessed the 19th will win!)
Prize:
If the winner lives in South Florida, he/she will win a pup from this very plant! Winner must pick up the plant locally (and get a subsequent tour of a most amazing garden).
This plant must remain in the South Florida climate, so;
If the winner lives outside the South Florida area, he/she will win a very beautiful orchid, the Cattleya Blc. Mt. Hood 'Mary' AM/AOS
(see the photo on the top right of this page: http://togofcoralgables.com/Wallpaper.aspx )
Bonus!
We would like to have an Ae Ae banana tasting when the bunch is picked (or thereabout) so whomever would like to attend, let either jnstropic (http://www.bananas.org/member.php?u=253) or myself know!
To enter:
Reply on this thread and post the date you think the bunch will ripen and get picked.
I will update this post and add your username next to the date you pick.

If you would like your color changed, lmk!
For those still about to enter, if you would like a certain color, please say so in your entry.
April 30th or more !!
I added more dates, you get one shot to guess again if you like if it's within a few hours from now. For those just getting to the thread, the list of dates had ended at April 30, but I added more dates to the list now so this explains Brian's "or more" reasoning...
Anyway, good luck and most of all, let's all have fun while we watch the progress!

I gotta say April 6.
Has the pup been seperated?
Could it be shipped if we pay for it?
Added your entry.
We expected this question to arise. The answer is nope, it cannot be shipped outside South Florida. It's not a logistics issue, but rather it's because this plant is well accustomed to the climate and would do well in another yard in the area (most of S. Fl has the Coral Gables climate). Maybe Jordan will pass by the thread and add some more to the answer for you. But it's one of his requirements!!

Terry, the Ae Ae is ripe when there are at least three fruit that can be used as a normal table banana and there will be enough green fruit to make chips and toastedos.
D'Andra asked: Has the pup been separated? Could it be shipped if we pay for it?
No pups can't be separated until May. The Ae Ae needs warm weather to be moved. This past fall a rain squall blew down two plants (the largest ones and they didn't have any pups). I replanted one and in a month I had two new leaves and shortly after that it put out a flower. I cut the flower in hope of getting the three very small pups to prosper. I had 6 pups in all but as the sun dimmed and the nights grew cool they all died. You can see this plant on my site. The biggest one was left to sprout pups but it just rotted.
I have shipped only one Ae Ae. The stem was 10 feet tall and Longwood Garden in Kennet Pen. sent a large truck to pick it up. The following year they mentioned it in there web site. But this year they no longer mention it. Seems that they lost it again.
I have grown this banana for 40 years. And I gave them away for 25 years and know of only three that truly prospered. But when I found out that a plant that I had given to some one, turned around and sold it, I decided to sell them to commercial banana growers, and none of them seem to be successful. I am giving this plant to someone in south Florida with hope that it might thrive.
The alternate prize is an awarded orchid that is more valuable then an Ae Ae pup.

very beautiful orchid, the Cattleya Blc. Mt. Hood 'Mary' AM/AOS
(see the photo on the top right of this page: )
The name sounds familiar. In the early 70's, I had a collection of Cattleyas with the "Mt. Hood" name. Did these orchids come from the Pacific NW? Specifically, from Bealls Orchids, or Baker & Chantry?

Pithy, the watermark is a self portrait that I drew to use in a gardening column of a local newspaper that I wrote for a few years (about 15 years ago). Back then I looked enough like the drawing that people ask me if I was the writer in the paper. The little man is called TOG.
Chong, Bealls Orchids had a series Hood, Shasta and a few more. Most of the Mt. Hood plants were pink. I have one pink clone in the wallpaper album and two forms of 'Mary'. The awarded plant started out all white, But it sometimes has a pink spot on the lip. This year the pink spotted plants were marked and I will check if it goes back to all white.

Yesterday a friend stopped by and I told him about the Ae Ae contest. Of course he wanted to know when the fruit would be ripe. Honestly I have no idea when the fruit will be ripe. This week the temperature dropped to 41, 51 and another 41 but the last two days it topped 80. Cold weather will slow it up and rain will step it up. Today I took a picture and posted it. Check it out and see if it looks bigger.

I have never cut off the bud. I have not seen any problem. It's just something to do, because someone told you to do it.
Well, nobody actually "told" me to do anything. I was just asking a simple question, I wasn't insinuating that there were any "problems" associated with not doing it.
And as a matter of fact, it's not just something to do. Cutting the bud off removes the apical meristem of the plant. Whether or not this actually helps the fruit mature quicker or not is up for debate. It does remove the apical dominance for that pseudostem however, and enables the lateral buds on the corm to start growing, or growing faster. So...if you wanted your pups to grow faster, cutting the bud off would accomplish that.

Cool! I'd sure like to make a trip, one of these days, to Florida - so many of the forums nana peeps are there, so it would be fascinating to make the rounds. And banana tasting would be on a par w/the wine tasting trips we have here, like Anna suggested above!

Calling all South Floridians and whoever else wants to make the flight & drive!
Send me a private message if you would like to take part in the banana chip tasting at Jordan's place in Miami, Florida!
It's scheduled for not this but the next Sunday, June 3rd, 2007.
Beverages will be provided!
Bring your lawn chair!
Jordan and his lovely wife Margaret will be making banana chips from unripe fruit from this bunch! We will not pick the top bananas (the first that will be ripe), but rather, we will be picking unripe bananas from below those to use for the cooking.
Send either jnstropic (http://www.bananas.org/private.php?do=newpm&u=253) or myself a private message to RSVP. You must include your phone number! We'll call you to give you directions. It'll be a lot of fun and you'll visit a charming garden that's fit for a king. If there's enough interest, we can even coordinate some plant trading if anyone wants to load up some potted plants. So please also specify if you want to bring plants to trade. Jordan will not be trading as he has too many plants, but I would like to and I hope others will too. There will also be giveaway plants.. various extras and important cuttings.
Let the good times roll!

We will be picking UNRIPE fruits, we're still waiting for this bunch to ripen and a winner will be determined at that time.
We will leave the top friuts alone so as to not interfere with the contest.

My class is from 8am to 5pm in West Palm Beach,
I see you are gonna have a plant swap also.
I grow brugmansia(Angel Trumpets), I have close to about 60 or so different varieties. Are they banned in Dade County. At the present time I only have 5 or 6 varieties of banana's, I lost some others that I had last year during a spell with my health.

My DSL was high jacked today. Two days ago my wife went to ATT to get a cell phone. The sales people ask if she wanted to bundle some things with the cell phone. She said no and the we were happy with our DSL. This morning I had no Internet connection. I called Snappy and in two minutes I had a teck checking it out. ATT was trying to high jack my connection. My wife went back to the ATT shop and burned there back sides, she's a pro. Snappy had me up and working by 3 pm. It was a scam. Be warned.

My wife and I are now getting the secondary prizes - all that fruit. We just finished dinner and on our plate was fried Ae Ae. My wife used a ripe but still firm Ae Ae and sliced it like you would for a fruit cocktail. Then fried it in butter.
Bigdog I was surprised that it took so long to mature. I watered the plants, but that's not like rain. We had a very moderate winter with a very cool spring. I have never counted the days but it sure seemed longer then usual.
Modenacart, email me and I will see about sending the orchid to you. The plant is Bc. Mount Hood 'Mary' AM/AOS - google it and see some pictures.

You should be able to grow it in the pot, as it is, for a year. The best thing is to get a slightly bigger clay pot and a metal hanger. Put the plastic pot in the clay pot. Then you can hang it in a tree while the weather is above 50 f.

They can take full sun before 10 am and after 4pm. Your plant was in the green house and should not be put in full sun. But sun coming thru a tree is perfect. Many of my orchids are in full sun but they were put out in the fall not the middle of summer.
