I wondered if anyone knew anyone reputable that sells AeAe banana plants. Would like to try one and get it out of my mind lol. They are so great looking and I see why they were at one time limited to hawaii royalty. It could be a nursery or someone here (would be better b/c I trust people here)that wants to sell one. I know the risk and ect with this plant. Also, what would be a good price for one of these? Thanks alot,
Paulo

Let me know if you cant find one. I used to sell them , but I no longer grow AeAe as I have found the variegated Indonesian Ivory looks almost identical and is a much hardier and less finicky plant to grow. I can see if my friend still has any suckers on his clump available. Im pretty sure the cost would be $100-$125, but if you are interested I can call and find out for sure.

I had heard for years too that they were reserved for Hawaiian royalty. The authors of "The World of Bananas in Hawaii: Then and Now" have a whole section on A'ea'e. Surprisingly, there is no evidence in any of the research they did that this was the case!

Well, I heard about the 'royalty' angle, too. I wasn't around then, so I can't verify it one way or another. My wife, however, is a direct descendant of the Chief of Kohala (place where Kamehameha was born), who also hid/protected him until he was 5. Her family also is related to Kamehameha III. So I guess she would qualify, and I would be the 'royal consort' (read: boy-toy :2745: ). I assume, then, that we are 'allowed' to have an Ae Ae, and Ele Ele, which was also reported to be reserved for the Ali'i.

Would be neat if someone could figure out if this was true. Probably would have to be on one of the islands to find out this type of history. Looked some online but no real info. Someone want to sponsor me for a trip to The Big Island? lol Whenever I go I may try to find out some info. To me this (and other Hawaiian history) is really interesting. Unfortunately it will be a few years at least.
