I read an abstract on germinating strelitzia juncea seeds in an enriched oxygen atmosphere, would love to read the whole article, but don't want to pay through the nose for the privilege. Does anyone have access to it? Cheeky I know, and probably not legal, but knowledge should be free man :08:

Unfortunately not, but I can get you the one about Musa scarification and agar jelly.

Hi,
No success to find it complete too...
...but i found this : Birds of paradise propagation, flowering article. (http://www.world-agriculture.com/home-garden/propagation-flowering-of-birds-of-paradise.php)
As written in propagation section, oxygen has an effect for sure.
(no idea of the oxygen %)
Tryptophan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryptophan) also increased germination % (at 5ppm).
Bananas contain tryptophan.
Here some important readings before oxygen experimentation (http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/hse8.pdf) http://www.clipart-fr.com/data/clipart/explosion/explosion_010.gif

Thanks guys, I did get hold of the article in the end, tried to replicate it, but not much success due to lack of oxygen gas. Gave me some ideas though. :08:

I don't know how determined you are but you do know that electrolysis causes water to decompose into hydrogen and oxygen?
In other words you can fill a balloon or something up with pure oxygen from a cup of water and a DC power adaptor.
And the disclaimer for this is that this is NOT a recommendation for anyone to do anything stupid. :waving:

Catchy title though. ;)

You can buy little cannisters of 02 on line.

I tried hydrogen peroxide, it releases oxygen as it decomposes.
To be honest I got 2 strelizia juncea and 2 Mandelas Gold to germinate the normal way, so I'm not desperate to experiment. Although I do have a 1000 reginae seeds and some sulphuric acid ready and waiting to go. I just need the time.
I'm convinced though that oxygen may well help all seeds, including banana seeds to germinate.
