I stopped making New Year's Resolutions years ago; but, this year I'm making an exception.
I resolve to cut down and monitor regrowth of 50 POPCORN TREES this year.
I'm sick of these foreign and invasive trees. They're taking over. I've already started my campaign by cutting down 3 VERY LARGE popcorn trees. Now all I have to do is cut them up and burn them.
I'm going to plant bananas in some of the areas and other native trees in most places. If anybody has small native trees that you can dig from the forest I'll pay postage to ship them here and use them to replace the popcorn trees.
Some trees that would do good in this area are native crabapple, dogwood, redbud, oaks, hickory nut, tuplip poplar, oaks, honey suckle (not the vine, but the bush, you might call them azalea). The city will let me cut some of the trees if I will replace them with something else so any help will be appreciated. That's not to say that some will be planted on my own land.
Where I'm cutting I'm finding loads of smilax _smylax? so if anybody want some let me know and I'll dig it for you and send it to you for postage. It has its purpose.
Join me and cut a popcorn tree. I can send you a pine tree (that's al I have) for replacement.
Oh, sassafras would work too.

Do they smell like popcorn?

No, but the seeds resemble a kernal of popcorn and when it's ripe it pops and spews those seeds out and it seems like every one of them sprouts. They are most agressive and are slowly taking over our forests of native trees/
I'd like to know just how widespread this tree is and would like to hear from you. I'll map it out, so do you have popcorn trees where you live. Let me know, I'm just curious.
I hate this tree with a passion.
Last night I joined the Arbor Day group and for joining they are sending me 10 free trees. I know they will be small and I'll never seem most of them attain much size or bloom, but whoever comes after me will enjoy them - I hope!
Think about joining and plant your gift trees.

I resolve to fix up all of my yard equipment now, power and hand, so that I'm ready to plant and start fertin on time for a change.
Waiting for fruit bunches to be ready to pick in Dec and Jan is really getting old.
Also going to replace certain naners with short cycle varieties.

HA pups to good homes!
Good home here and more room too now that I'm on a death march against the popcorn trees. Four huge ones - 20-30 feet - have felt my wrath and are on the ground waiting to be sawed up and BURNED. One more big one today.

Well, it's 5 down and 45 to go to reach my goal of cutting down pop corn trees. The ones that I have downed so are have been huge, maybe 30'. They're down but not cut up so I'll be busy for a few days.
Wonder how they would work in the fireplace?
I hope I can make a trip up to Birmingham before winter is over. My family is up there and we have some land outside of Birmingham where I could dig up most any kind of tree that grows in the South. Not only trees, but wild flowers. I remember from my childhood there were so many wild flowers. Wild azaleas - we called them honeysuckles - , birdsfoot violets, sweet william, redbuds, dogwoods, and on and one. Lots of ferns also.
I need trees to replace what I cutting.

You're right Tony, but only blue/purple ones. We use to eat them.
