View Full Version : How many bananas do you eat in a week?

I get this question all the time. People think that the banana farmer must live on a steady diet of bananas. The truth is that I eat fewer bananas than the average american. I might eat 1-2 nam wahs per week and that's it. I do eat a lot of plantains as I tend to substitute them for potatoes. But I kind of imagine the last thing the guy at the slaughterhouse wants to eat at dinner is a steak.
I recently found out that the local soup kitchen would love to have my culled hua moas which are only bad because they are too short. Maybe the glades will become a better place one toston at a time

I generally only eat store bought plantains and that is only when what I'm cooking requires their use. I'm spoiled!

I actually dont eat many bananas because I dont like the taste of store bananas. Even Apple Bananas dont taste that great when store bought. If only they had ice cream bananas for sale more often around here. Until then, If I have any bananas at all, its usually cooked plantain or boiled bananas that havent ripened yet!
I'd say that I have about 1 banana a week.

Depends on what is ripe. If it is just store bought Cavendish 1-2 a day. On the other hand, if it is something smaller and delicious, I might eat as many as 6 day. But then again, my wife says my diet is more like a chimp than a human -- mostly fruit. :lurk:

Usually 2-3 fresh, and 2 or so in a smoothie. Almost always dwarf brazillian since that's what I grow most of an what is most available at farmers markets. Often more than that if I have a whole rack that's ripening.

Back when I was doing smoothies, I'd usually have 2-3 namwahs and a cup of blueberries in a smoothie each morning. I need to get back into that habit.

1 a day for me too - store bought. But when I have a bunch hanging and ready to start on it's only mine. Most of my naner types are smaller than Mrs Chiquita's so it's 3 or 4 chopped up in my wheaties - with sliced almonds and dried blueberries (sugar substitute). For dessert it's a honeybell tangelo (in season now) and a blueberry scone.
Plantains --- maybe every other week.

I normally take a whole or half hand of a variety if it's the first time I've grown it, or I'll take the smallest ones on the bottom of bunch for varieties I've grown a lot, everything else goes to market. Normally I guess I don't really eat much at all, 0-1 per week, but when the circumstances are right and they start coming in, I may go through 2 hands in a week (20-30 bananas).

1 a day usually, store bought. Still waiting on mine to get big enough to produce. With any luck my Dwarf Cavendish will bloom in the next six months or so (and maybe the M. dasycarpa also).:woohoonaner:

We usually buy at least 2-3 hands a week and I eat 2-3 bananas a day. I can't get buy without them, I feel empty if I don't eat one.

Although I usually eat at least 1 banana a day... If I run out I always have some homemade banana pudding in the fridge ;)
I honestly stay stocked up with vanilla wafer, whipped cream, and all kinds of tasteful instant puddings. Iz the truth :ha:
