Are pisang raja and raja puri the same thing?
I got some suckers for Pisang Raja, FHIA-1 and FHIA-18 today.
There are some other plants labeled as Raja Puri but they look exactly the same. Come to think of it, FHIA-1 and FHIA-18 don't look much different.

Negative. Or at least they shouldn't be if they are correctly labeled.

Nick, like Jon say's, the real deal for each of these are very different. Both are AAB genomes, but Rajapuri is a dwarf (about 2 m p-stem) with small fruit, whereas Pisang Raja is a full sized plant (4 m p-stem) with bigger fruit. The true Pisang Raja is supposed to have have orangish flesh. Rajapuri, on the other hand has cream colored flesh, and to me, the flavor is very similar to dwarf Brazilian (based on limited "sampling"). Rajapuri and dwarf Brazilian plants are nearly indistinguishable to me, except that full grown Rajapuri are usually shorter than dwarf Brazilian.

pisang raja fruit tastes quite different, subacid, almost like a pineapple.

I wonder if he was talking about the right plant because to me, Raja Puri (as well as Brazilian and Dwarf Brazilian) has a bit of pineapple-like flavor. I have yet to try Pisang Raja, so I can't comment on its flavor.
