Is there anything left in your neighborhood? Sounds like it wasa not good weather for bananas last might.

There was a really big gust when it started and it sounded like the roof was going to blow off! It wasn't too bad damage wise though. Some downed trees and power outages here locally, but my yard did surprisingly well. About a dozen broken banana leaves and some shredded leaves laying all over the place, but no broken p-stems so far. It's supposed to pick up again tonight so we'll see what happens.
This is exactly why I stopped growing tall reds!

Guess I spoke too soon, a big gust just snapped a Raja Puri in half that had a young bunch on it. The Hawaiian Apples are still hanging in there though. Wierd
EDIT: It was an HA that fell on the Raja Puri. I hate these winds!
EDIT:#2 I lost two HA's, one is laying on the roof, the other on the RP.

It's a warm dry wind. They say tonight will be worse. The only thing it's good for is surfing when there is a big swell because it helps to make the waves more hollow so it's easier to get barreled.

The gusts started down here in San Diego about 1pm, somewhere in the 40 mph range. It knocked over a couple of bananas in 15 gallon pots but no damage. All the bananas growing in my plant are currently at about 5' p-stem, so no damage other than a few frayed leaves.
The humidity is down to 29%.

I am very sorry to see that Mitchel :( At least many are still hanging!
I wish you all ride this out with no further damage! :)

That is exactly why I stopped growing tall anything. We had several big wind events this summer and none were hurricanes. The exception is the tall PK -- it shreds leaves easily and is strongly rooted.
Mitchel --- You got fences, right? Do what I did -- mount cleats - use ropes. Tie up just under the petioles.

Just wood fences and I don't want to chance them getting pulled over by the big plants. I've had enough of these talls now. These HA's are the only talls I have left and they will be gone soon enough too. More room for Pisang Klotek! :08:

Mitchel, not sure what planet you are on, or what you gave to me, but my PK is way, way tall. If you are moving to all short bananas, PK wouldn't be on the list.
Glad to hear that the damage wasn't worse, though I do feel your pain. I hate losing a banana with fruit.

If wind is an issue, don't grow Kandrian. Every time we get winds over 30mph I lose some. The pseudostems don't break, the whole plant just uproots and falls over.

My HA's are easily 5' taller than my PK's. Most of them are much taller than that.
Could be the location of the stand on my property but I've never lost a PK P-stem in these winds even though they are not the most stout p-stems. I have had to prop bunches though.
The Namwah I got from you does great in wind too. I have a large bunch hanging right now with no prop rod and in this wind and it's doing just fine! It should be ready by X-mas. I am very excited about x-mas bananas!
The best wind resistant non dwarf in my garden that also came from you, FHIA 18. Like telephone poles those things! :ha:

My plants have been braving the wind. Even the Mysore has suffered minimal damage thanks to it being nestled in a nice cozy spot. The wind up here is probably even worse!

Sorry Mitchel. I guess it was your turn. We had 50+ MPH winds a few weeks ago here in Ventura (and <15% humidity), but so far, we haven't had the brutal winds from this front. Knock on wood. One of my employees who lives a few miles from you has a massive avocado tree it was raining avocados last night. She nearly got one to the dome.
Jon, those tall Brazilian ("Hawaiian apple") Mitchel has are beasts -- way taller than anything you are growing -- at least from what I've seen in both of your yards.

I agree, Mitchell, F-18 is a thick dude. The Hawaiian Apple get folded every time we have a wind here. Lost 3 stems a few months back. It may be due, in part, to its exposed location. However, the Misi Luki 10' away has never lost a stem.

My Misi Luki Awak is the sturdiest banana I've grown.
The prediction for today in San Diego is 20+ mph winds.

So, what I gather is none of the truly tall cultivars (15'+) can handle wind over 30-50 mph. Cardaba folds (see Clare's posts), Kandrian topples (Nick), tall Brazilian = Hawaiian apple folds, and tall red folds. Any exceptions in the really tall ones? Of the medium ones (10-15'), Misi Luki Awak is the toughest, with some other honorable mentions, like FHIA 18 and Pisang Klotek.

Our winds were "only" up to 35 or so here so didn't lose any bananas. Unfortunately, a tall (125'?) eucalyptus across the highway fell and crushed an old grain silo.

The dryness (<15% humidity), the warm winds, and the cold nights have made for some sad looking banana plants in So Cal. My yard can attest to that!

By the way, the valve surrounded by the yellow barrier is a PG&E 12" line under 1,200 PSI. Maybe could have been a big oops. Tree was about 100' tall and about 100 years old.

Today we had 7 hours with relative humidity between 8-12%. That's at a NOAA weather station only a few miles from the beach. Just matters what direction the wind is blowing. That's been typical of the last several days. When the wind is blowing out of the east, the humidity is super low.

Wow, pretty impressive, Jon.
Had to chuckle a bit, as my son was watching the video the same time as me he viewed the eucalyptus and said "that's some pretty good firewood". I reminded him it was going to be chipped.

Another tough day for bananas in Ventura/Camarillo: gusts over 30 mph for several hours (with a few hours with gusts from 40-46 mph), relative humidity 10-20% since morning, night time lows in the high 30's. The new leaves since the last big wind event are now all shredded.
