I have not posted for a while; been swamped (haven’t we all). If you are looking for corms please contact Kat aka “Dreamofthetropics”. If you are ever in Tampa I will gladly share pups that I have available..but no longer have the time to ship.
The videos I previously posted were positively received so I thought I would share a new video.
This is the “Nickel Tour of a “Section” of our Garden. I tried to focus on the bananas (as that is what many of us are most interested in). We also grow Avocados, Mangos, Carambola and many other tropical fruits.

Looking really great! I haven't had time to post either. With our new aquisition of over 600 gingers its been hectic trying to find room! Everything is coming along wonderfully here. We did already have one freeze (last friday) which I covered about half of the bananas. The ones I didn't cover got hit (I'll have to try and take some photos or do a video here shortly) I miss seeing you guys we were coming down like once a month and now it feels like its been forever! How is Sam doing? We really enjoyed watching the video (Jackie watched it with me) Thank you so much for posting it!

Thanks, Chris, very impressive papaya and lot of nice things. Is your lychee pretty young or does it just not do well for you (since it's still small)? I've got one here and it's taken the past 3 winters pretty well.

Wow, amazing garden!! Everything is edible and it looks so tropical! Those Papayas are very impressive. If I had a climate like yours, I would envision my yard having lots of tropical edibles (Like the sugar apples, tamarind, and of couse bananas!). It must be great living so close to the tropics (and having a yard that is the tropics!)
Thanks for sharing!

Hello Chris,
Your property looks great. Just the way I like it. Jungle! Thanks so much for sharing! I havent posted in a while either as our move to Hawaii is now seven months away and we have so much to do with getting our Santa Barbara house ready to rent. We just got the shipping quote today. It will be here before I know it.
I am planning on taking 200 varieties of bromeliads to Hawaii. I know, I am F-ing crazy. They are rare and I don't want to have to start over. I will come back for some banana plants I can't buy there as well. They are all going legally with a permit. I hope to post a video before I leave.
Thank you again!

I have them in the ground now; shipping with flat rate priority mail box to continental US ready starting April 16th.
One day soon, I have *got* to post some "identify these mystery nanners" photos. The plants are huge, but I haven't gotten them to fruit long enough to pick them out.
Also, it does not help that my wife left the cable for the digital camera in Michigan two weeks ago...

Awesome...thanks for stopping by...apologize for not spending more time touring the garden...baby duty was calling.
So..the Golden Aromatic taste like it is infused with Kiwi..I would agree with that Mrs. Rmplmnz says the texture is "very spongy" and that she prefers the denser bananas (Hua Moa, Ele Ele, Saba, etc.,).
I love sharing Golden Aromatics with friends and family that previously complained about the tiny fruit on dooryard bananas...the Golden Aromatics are monster size fruit. The videos really do not give the size of the fruit justice.
Definitely need to catch up again soon..I will email you as more racemes ripen:-)

The size of those fruit is impressive. Looks like probably another mix up with names somewhere along the line. The info I have says "Golden Aromatic" is has a AAA genome and is like a Cavendish. Those bananas definitely aren't AAA (the plant has closed petioles in the photos) and they have some of the classic features of Bluggoe ("Orinoco"): the spongy texture, angular shape of the fruit, and the brown network of lines on the outside of the peel. But as long as you like them, that's all that really matters, not their name.

Have you seen/have any pics of Golden Aromatic fruit?
I had a hard time finding anything about this cultivar from any reputable source. For example, it is not in the MGIS database.
There is a small picture here:
http://www.hawaiifruit.net/bib1417-lowR.jpg
In that photo (I have the poster and so can see it better than in that link) the fruit look nothing like yours and much closer to a Cavendish, though with a bit of a bottle nose. It is listed as having a AAA genome, which yours doesn't have.
I don't know what yours really is, given that you say it's not that much like an Orinoco in fruit characteristics. There are other Bluggoes and I have seen some as large as those fruits.
Rmplmnz- Your place looks outstanding! Thanks for the video motivation.
I just planted our first bananas this weekend- 7 of them, but all the same variety - Dwarf Cavendish. Your video has motivated me to get more done with the space we have. I would love to see your garden also sometime - I work in Tampa but live in the Hudson area.
Did you start the papaya from seed?

CD,
Thanks for the very nice compliments!!
Lol on the papayas...as I never planted any of them...they are all volunteers....I just hope they start growing in advantageous spots...Unfortunately I have to cut the tops of or they get too tall (then I am just feeding the squirrels).
Definitely have to make arrangements for you to stop by after work one day and load up on some corms...
Hudson...you are not too far from Kat ("dreamingofthetropics")
Send me an email and we can work out a time for you to come over and load up! I have a couple of other members that would like to stop by and get some corms..We can work it out so everyone hits the garden at the same time and you can exchange plants/ideas.

Thanks Jeff, wish we could have connected. Hopefully you will make it down our way again soon!

I am so envious right now. My Raja Puri is pathetic compared to yours, and my Namwah is a joke thanks to that creeping fig that's invading its root system. The largest p-stem on my RP is at about 5' right now and it's just about ready to throw a bud. When it bloomed last it was at 5' and a half about. What do you use for fert? Just wood chips/compost?

Hello Caliboy,
Sorry to hear about your woes...difficulties in Tampa are:
Squirrels
Squirrels
Squirrels
Tropical Hurricane/Depression/Storm Force Winds
Occasional Freezes...
What do you use for fert? Just wood chips/compost?
Horse Poo, Coffee Grounds and Compost..I have never spent a dime on fertilizer (no worries I have wasted the gardening budget on many other crazy things:-)
The best fertilizer I ever used was 1,000 pounds of Shrimp Shells (I got for free from a local Shrimp processing plant)...the Sabas were 5 feet in Circumference and over 25 feet tall (I used to have the pics posted; but deleted them for personal reasons). Massive!....then I layered horse poo on top.
Following is a repeat of a post on another thread:
http://www.bananas.org/f2/praying-hands-jumbo-leaves-11912-2.html#post135487
We focus on creating the "Forest Floor"...I have been in the same house for 21 years and growing bananas for over 40 years.....I have never used chemical fertilizers (and I am not knowledgeable enough on this topic to debate those that do..just stating my experience)....I have had some trial and error....one time I was sitting in the back yard and it was like someone came through with a saw and cut everything down...I had added too much horse manure too close to the mattes and everything just fell over..."Live and Learn"
We add about 5 tons of leaves a year
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=34392&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=34392)
5 tons of tree mulch

A Botanical Hidden Gem: Gene Joyner's Unbelievable Acres
If you're in West Palm Beach and craving a relaxing afternoon walk through a quiet, secluded botanical rainforest, then Gene Joyner's Unbelievable Acres Botanic Garden is for you. Located at 470 63rd Trail North, this private, non-profit, man-made reproduction of a rainforest is a wonderfully "hands on" way to learn about and experience a real rainforest.
Gene Joyner began the Garden from an empty pasture containing only two pine trees and all plants currently seen in Unbelievable Acres were planted since July, 1970. No trees were over 6 feet tall when first planted and Gene personally wheelbarrows in mulch and new plant specimens because the paths are too narrow for a tractor. You can sense and appreciate this personal touch as your guide describes the natural wonders found here, Unbelievable Acres is truly an accomplishment.
During the tour our friendly guide pointed out countless species of plants, trees and fruits while sharing a sometimes amusing history of them along with ways some species can be used in food preparation. Praying bananas trees, angel trumpets, sausage trees, starfruit… the sights and smells are sure to please the senses. If you are interested in a rainforest experience where you can nibble on lemony hibiscus flowers or spicy allspice leaves while taking in the beauty and wonder of nature, Unbelievable Acres is the place to go.
The tour runs every second Saturday of the month in groups of ten and the cost per person is $10. For more information please call 561-242-1686.

Ha ha..we like to call it organized "Chaos".
In this climate things get out of control very quickly...
Ube yams..can take over.
An Avocado seed thrown in a compost pile becomes a 20 foot tree.....a lil Royal Poinciana seedling grows massive in two years...
I have a friend who actually told me "you have a maintenance free yard".....(because we have "no grass") I am like..yeah if you love constant tree work (trimming to shape and "control" canopies). Cutting down 30 foot tall 200 pound bamboo poles. Cutting down massive papaya trees that have been over taken by bugs....the sap is like being covered with red ants...only it does not last longs (after you scrub it off in a frenzy).

Put on "gloves" and "safety glasses" before pruning a papaya tree. The latex sap of the papaya may cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

Ed, love your enthusiasm!....Hate to temper it..but Spring Hill is a little cold for bananas..
We typically experience less effects from the cold than our friends as far south as Ft. Meyers due to our proximity to the bay. Our micro climate can be 5 to 10 degrees higher than theirs and this is significant. Being near the bay..the higher water temperature helps with the air temperature.
Many of the members have been to our garden and toured through the West Indian Avocados (typically only grown in South Florida) and other cold sensitive tropical plants that survived the two brutal contiguous winters (2009-2010 & 2010 - 2011).
We are located on the Peninsula within "Hillsborough Bay" (the smaller peninsula, the larger one is Pinellas County including St. Petersburg):

Tampa Bay, the largest open-water estuary in Florida, extends approximately 35 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico and is 5 to 10 miles wide along most of its length. Four segments make up the open-water section. Hillsborough Bay, the smallest of these segments, receives runoff from a large portion of the city of Tampa. The Hillsborough and Alafia Rivers drain into Hillsborough Bay, as do a number of smaller tributaries. Middle Tampa Bay receives runoff from the Little Manatee River and drainage from smaller tributaries along the Hillsborough and Pinellas County coastlines. Old Tampa Bay receives runoff from portions of Clearwater, St. Petersburg, and Tampa. Lower Tampa Bay, which has the largest volume of the four segments, connects the mouth of the bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The Manatee River, which receives runoff from the city of Bradenton, flows into the southern portion of this bay segment.

TAMPA - Heavy rain is prompting barricaded streets and major flooding in areas like south Tampa and Davis Island this afternoon.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers first training practice was delayed due to weather, with an update to come this afternoon regarding the status of practice.
In addition, flooding has been reported at Dale Mabry and Henderson, per Tampa police dispatch.

Updated:
Tampa shattered a 42-year-old record for the amount of rainfall for Aug. 1.
By 3 p.m., it had already received 3.1 inches of rain. The previous record, from 1973, was 2 inches.
And that's in addition to the rainfall that has swamped Tampa Bay since July 24, thanks to a stubborn low pressure system that has stalled over Florida, said Tyler Fleming, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
"July and August tend to be the wetter months," Fleming said. "But what we've been seeing is rainfall that has been more persistent."

It's amazing to me that this thread has only six pages of responses in the years that it has existed.
Your citrus collection is more idiosyncratic than most. How did you decide on what citrus to include? To exclude?
How many of your seedling avocados have remained in situ through to first-fruiting? Or have more of them spent their first years in containers?
Have you fruited your Inga?
I'd be interested to know if you've taken a core sample to examine your development of humus over time. I'd love to see a picture of that! (Do you chip the trimmings from your own trees? What does that amount to annually?)

Wow..thank you! Very flattered by your nice comments! Dozens of Banana.org members have visited the garden (as many as 5 at a time) and taken thousands of corms. I have made many awesome friends in person and on-line thanks to the Board.

Thanks, I have lost more citrus than I am currently growing. I have always loved citrus, 20 years ago I had a good friend that owned a citrus nursery. Buying grafted plants for $3 each is a bargain. I wanted fruit that was unavailable for purchase in stores and Key Limes are awesome! I first saw Pommelos at another friend’s local nursery. 20 years ago I was pretty active in the Tampa RFCI (Rare Fruit Council) chapter.

How many of your seedling avocados have remained in situ through to first-fruiting? Or have more of them spent their first years in containers?
N.
They key was to spend zero time in containers as this restricts the root growth/development significantly. Ten or so years ago I was on a Mango eating expedition with the Tampa RFCI and we visited a Merritt Island Mango grove, picked and ate different mangos to our heart’s content! The grove owner, whose name is escaping my memory right now, eschewed grafted plants that had circuitous root balls. I did not plan which avocado seedlings would grow, I just shoved avocado seeds throughout the yard, fast forward a few years and thriving trees. It is amazing how much faster seedlings grow than grafted pants. We have seedling canistels , avocados and a mango (all grow at triple the rate of grafted plants I have purchased at nurseries).
I am notorious for biting off “way” more than I can chew. I was at an abandoned trailer park (destined for demolition to make way for a planned development) collecting (2,500) old style Augusta and other bricks at 9 ½ pounds each I collected over 2,500 pounds (severely going over my truck’s cargo capacity) nightly for a week until 11 p.m. When I came across a seedling avocado…..my mind thought “wow…a big mature avocado”. Easy enough I dug the avocado tree out of the ground…getting the tree in to the truck..another issue. At over 400 pounds..even the crazy fitness beast that I was at the time (2006) I could not leverage that tree in to the truck. I gave up and called a friend and went back with my wife and friend and we got the tree in the truck. This is the avocado tree in the videos referred to as the “Trailer Park” avocado. It has massive so so tasting fruit with very smooth green skin. It was over 7 years in our yard before it started fruiting. The tree had been “banded” by it former owner to induce fruiting.
Have you fruited your Inga?
N.
No, it froze completely to the ground in 2011. I gave it up for dead when a tiny sprig popped out of the dead stump.
I'd be interested to know if you've taken a core sample to examine your development of humus over time. I'd love to see a picture of that! (Do you chip the trimmings from your own trees? What does that amount to annually?)
N.
No, we have never take a core sample…most of the garden (50’ by 110’) looked like this in December of 2005:
http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=34028&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=34028)

http://www.bananas.org/gallery/watermark.php?file=33925&size=1 (http://www.bananas.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=33925)
We do not chip our own trees.
In good years we add over 15 tons of leaves, horse manure and wood chippings, following is post that goes in to more detail:

This was a good friend of mine that owned a commercial nursery, he sold to retail nurseries.
These were small plants in the "sleeve" nursery pots. I always buy the smallest size, amazing how fast plants grow in the right climate.

Thanks Jeff, still hoping you can make it to Tampa sometime and load up....Ele Ele, Hua Moa (quick from bloom to harvest).

Thanks, probably Monkey Finger as in the past the pseudostem always broke (hence why I put a bamboo support on the raceme). We like them all, although the DB is probably the most consistent fruit producer with fruit on the lower end of the quality spectrum (everyone has their favorites).
Our neighbors and co-workers are always excited about the diversity of the bananas. I frequently hear "yes you have given me these before..I like the "little bananas". It is a waste of time to try and explain these are not the same "little bananas" as the ones I gave them a few weeks ago...LOL.
We usually eat them fresh, then freeze, dehydrate and give away the extras.

What type of dehydrator do you use when the bell of over-ripeness tolls? Nesco? Excalibur? I'm a fan of vacuum-sealing upon dehydration. What's your approach?

We just use a cheap one (stack able trays, variable heat and a fan) that I have had for so long I cannot remember how or when I got it. I agree with the vacuum-sealing after drying (if only my wife would allow me to buy another single purpose kitchen device) we store the dried bananas in the fridge.

Go forth and search for one. Your wife would never know you had it but instead wonder at the marvelous little sucked tight bags you miraculously produced.

This looks awesome! I just got 5 acres in south Florida to start a permaculture tropical fruit farm for a non-profit im working for. I hope it looks as good as this in a few years time. Now I just gotta get WAY more than the 5 banana trees we have on the site now. Awesome Job. I'd love to see what your soil looks like. We just started getting organic material delivered and we are starting to do the same thing you did with building the "forest floor" over our florida sand.

Come on over with a truck and load up....I have had members visit and leave with over 100 corms.

Great video and thanks for the name drop on the Royal Poinciana. We saw these in bloom down in the Keys over Labor Day weekend and wondered what they were. It didn't occur to me to looks for pods, I wasn't even sure how they seeded.
How old is the tree?

I agree. After 5 years living in my house I wish we could move to a warmer and bigger place with more room for my plants, haha. Now I have a little paradise on my patio. :-) Where did you get your variegated calamondin? It seems hard to find here in FL. How long it took for the Poinciana tree to grow that big from seed? I got some seed pods from my last trip to Key West.

Hello Mushtaq,
Ae Ae pulp is somewhat orange and dense (not too dissimilar from Ele Ele), sweeter as it ripens.
A co-worker from the Caribbean broiled the Hua Moa i gave her when it was very green.
One can eat Ae Ae out of hand fresh or pan fry, boil, broil and fry green (tostones).
Chris
I have fought and am still fighting against procuring an AeAe but, if they're yummy cooked and unusually pretty, this may be a losing battle at some point since I'm a plantain gal at heart. Not yet...
