That's a pretty good question. Here's a pretty good example: Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan: Boy Scouts "Scouting For Food" (http://www.gcfb.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pg_scoutingforfood)

Both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts get involved. Our Boy Scout troop will converge on an area divided into six zones and knock on doors. Response is usually very good and the boys enjoy it. It's a pretty good way for them to repay the community for the support they receive.

We had pretty good success today, scouting for food. It's interesting coming across homes in various states of condition and trying to speculate how the owners my respond. The boys are sometimes oblivious to things and I had to tell them to skip the home with tall weeds in the front yard and broken windows. Another guy told them "no, I'm broke". Some people are prepared for the annual drive and have bags ready for them to pick up and some people thanked them for their service. One lady thanked me for helping the boys with their project. That made me feel pretty good but mostly like the fact that some people will get some needed help.

I'm aching pretty good, putting steel roofing on my new barn/shed at 12' to 16' above ground level. I got about 432 square feet covered today, about 1,584 to go! Will go faster now that I've got the layout marked and little tricks figured out. Each panel weighs about 75 pounds so it takes a pretty good amount of work to get it lifted in place.

I did a pretty good job as a contortionist climbing above and under trusses. I'm not used to using many of those muscles! I planned to take a photo today but forgot.

I had planned to finish it about a month ago but it's pretty good I didn't. I've got about 100 redwood trees along about 800 feet of perimeter of my farm and about 15' of the top of one of them broke off in a strong north wind about two weeks ago and landed on the trusses of my barn. No damage (other than the tree) but several panels my steel roofing would have been bent up pretty good if they were already in place.

Those pesky trees! :ha:

harveyc
11-23-2011, 11:52 PM
Redwoods are usually pretty good. This particular tree had a forked (double) top and last winter the larger portion of the top blew off to the north when we had a strong southeast wind. I had hoped the remaining top would take over and get stronger but discovered the trunk was damaged from when the top split off. Naturally, the top was more prone to being split off from a north wind. I used my pruning tower to cut off a clean top at about 20' high and hope for a new top to take over. fortunately, none of the remaining trees next to my pole barn have a forked top. Fingers crossed. I specifically built my barn next to this row of redwood trees as they will serve as a natural wall for my barn. Building a new structure with walls in the 100 year flood plain is riddled with restrictions but a pole barn without walls doesn't even require a permit. I've got a 40' cargo container next to the pole barn on the eastern side and will eventually get another on the south side, leaving only the west exposed until I put up a tall trellis for some Passiflora. I've got this planned pretty good. ;)

Had pretty good weather and was rested up by taking one day off from working on my pole barn. My helper and I finished putting all of the rest of the roof on today except for pieces that need to be cut about one foot wide on the ends (both will be cut from one 3' x 17'3" panel). I'm thinking about trying a cheapo double-cut saw from Harbor Freight for that job as those long cuts with tin snips will wear me out.

What about a pneumatic metal shear? You have air?

I had thought of that and, yes, I've got 3 air compressors (220v, big PTO driven, and smaller Honda gas driven), but cutting the gable tops will require cutting through lots of ridges that stand one inch tall and it's pretty hard to cut a straight line when going over ridges at an angle.

I found some pretty good advice here:
Cutting Steel Roofing (http://www.stripersonline.com/t/515168/cutting-steel-roofing)

A nibble is a good option but one poster mentioned that for straight cuts there's a sheet metal blade for circular saws that works great.

If you can not clean every square inch under what your cutting do not use a nibbler. They make little ultra sharp finger nail shaped cuttings that stick in your shoes or animals feet.

I installed roofing material painted a sandstone color. I don't care to have to do touch up painting as it would end up something less than pretty good.

From one of reviews of the Malco blade:
The saw blade seems to run cool and doesn't appear to throw sparks like an abrasive blade does. Sparks are really bad on products such as painted metal roofing. The sparks burn into the paint causing rust streaking and early failure of the metal finish.

couldn't you cut bottom up ?

harveyc
11-26-2011, 01:55 AM
I could cut from the bottom side but sparks can fly from both sides of the blade. That reviewer cut 18 gauge steel roofing material and it was not damaged. He cut 200 feet with one blade. I need to make two 17 foot cuts (ripping one remaining panel to get two pieces one foot wide) and cut 10 more cuts 3.1 feet long each to create 20 gable ends and some various cuts on one more piece to create two center pieces for each gable, maybe about 80 feet of cuts altogether. I've used abrasive blades on chop saws and know sparks fly everywhere. If I spent a few thousand on a plasma cutter I think that would work pretty good, burning only the edges which get covered up.

I ended up ordering Amazon.com: Bare-Tool Makita BCS550Z 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 5-3/8-Inch Metal Cutting Saw (Tool Only, No Battery): Home Improvement (http://www.amazon.com/Bare-Tool-Makita-BCS550Z-Lithium-Ion-Cordless/dp/B000K6GFMQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1322291318&sr=1-2) last night. Pretty good or better reviews of it and I've already got batteries from my drill and impact driver. I was somewhat reluctant to go with a cordless model but then remembered the pain when I bought about 10 sticks (20') of rebar at Lowe's once when I hadn't taken my trailer. They loaned me bolt cutters to try cutting it in the parking lot but that was extremely difficult.

My roofing is not flat but I can place a piece of flat material across it to run the base plate of the saw across.

My first Makita cordless drill purchased about 25 years ago was pretty good and the original NiCad batteries are still working for my friend whom I gave the drill to about 5 years ago. The battery doesn't last very long but enough for small home projects which is pretty good for a NiCad battery of that age. My Makita with NiMH batteries bought about 5 years ago was just "okay", with one battery not living very long and the second slowly become less effective. The clutch on it was also quickly going out so it was ineffective in driving screws (I was using both nails an screws for the framing of my pole barn since screws don't work loose but nails have greater shear strength). I went back and forth on what brand to buy a couple of weeks ago but am pleased with my new Makita drill and impact driver combo set with Lithium Ion batteries. I worked for a day and a half on just one battery and they charge in just 30 minutes so it's unlikely I'll ever run out of battery power except if I use this saw continuously. I was thinking of buying a cordless Makita circular saw anyways as I often need to make just a couple of cuts when I'm not near power. I'll probably buy a general purpose blade for this saw I just ordered for some of those other uses. Dewalt seems to be more widely used by a lot of contractors but I think that's mostly due to marketing through the big box stores. Each brand has a few negative reviews and generally a lot of very positive reviews. One reviewer said he bought Makita because everyone else on his job site had yellow and his tools were less likely to end up in someone else's bag. ;)

Im not a fan of cordless tools but Makita is much better than DeWalt if we talk about battery life. Thats from my profession point of view. I dont know if u have Bosh brand in US but they are also HQ in professional tools.

Sorry to be the Internet spelling copy but it's spelled Bosch and Sawzall (a Milwaukee tradename for a reciprocating saw). One of our other forum members (who shall remain nameless for now) once spelled it "sawsaw" and I bit my tongue then but think you will take feedback in a pretty good sort of way.

Makita had the best combination value when I looked and I decided to just stick with the same brand for each item so that when I need to add or replace a battery it will serve all of them. I thought about buying a cordless reciprocating saw but already have a corded one as well as a small (and large) generator that works out pretty good. I can't think of a time when I needed to use it up high so using my generator at ground level works out pretty good but I might change my mind later.

When I top-worked about 150 chestnut trees in 2007 it was a big job and I used a circular saw for cutting my stock for my modified rind bark grafts. My little 1,000 watt generator wasn't quite enough for my Skilsaw when I cut through limbs bigger than 1.5 inches so I got a 8,000 watt generator which can also serve as back-up power for my house. I think the new Makita circular saw will work out pretty good for future grafting projects.

I laughed a pretty good the other day. When reading reviews on drills/drivers on Amazon, two different owners said they liked their Makita because (among other things) they had dropped it from the roof of their house and it was undamaged. I don't recall ever dropping a drill from any height before but last week dropped my drill from about 15' one day and my driver from about the same height twice the next day. Trying to squeeze between or turn around between trusses 22.5" apart kept knocking them off my belt. I'm glad they landed on dirt instead of concrete. They were not damaged.

I didn't realize Bosch made 24V products that long ago. Are those NiCad or NiMH batteries? Are you still using original batteries?

NiCad batteries. One of the two original batteries is dead still using the other . I bought this when they first came out, when they were expensive, the set was $500.And yes 24v will twist your arm off

I was mostly ashamed of the expletive I blurted out each time. I'm pretty good about watching my language but it's a challenge when I'm already tired and have these frustrating incidents.

Speaking of shame, there's some animated movie about a dog that wears a "cone of shame" around it's neck/head. My son Michael took an old lamp cover and put it over his yellow lab's head when she misbehaved. I thought that was pretty good at first but he started over-using it and I warned him it was going to go around his neck unless he got rid of it. He's a pretty good kid and did what was right.

That is because most of the cityscapes evolved here after the advent of the automobile. In the old world
cities built up hundreds of years ago, when most of the traffic was pedestrian and only a few of the privileged
used horse and buggy. For whatever it is worth, I find your cities more attractive

I'm still using CS2 but now do RAW conversions in LR3 but sometimes still do some processing in CS2. Before I bought my 7D I read feedback from lots of users and almost everyone who complained about the 7D wasn't using LR for RAW conversions and the 7D fans said LR3 produced superior images. I've had the 7D for a year and say it's more than pretty good.

That looks pretty good. The boy scout method was to remove all the rust on low heat with vegetable oil. Then after it was cool again, cover it with Crisco and salt, letting it sit in a bag in a cool location for a week.

From the site:
The financing of Olive was done independently of any corporation. The goal now is to be the first film to not only be shot on a cell phone, but to also be the first independently financed feature film on 2,000+ theaters across the United States without the backing of a major studio.

Pretty good heart surgeon, though I think he's excellent Dr. James D. Morrissey, MD, Stockton, CA - General Surgery (http://www.healthgrades.com/physician/dr-james-morrissey-xbg6y)

Dad had bypass surgery with him in 1999 and had him replace a pacemaker in 2005 and at 7:30am tomorrow (Thursday morning) is having the generator (battery replaced). It's sub-pectoral so quite invasive compared to most. The doctor is 75 but still considered outstanding by every medical professional we've talked to. His youngest child is just a tad bit older than my own so he's a bit young for his age! ;)

If you're the praying type, prayers would be appreciated. When dad came home from his last pacemaker replacement he went into afib shortly after coming home and both my uncle and I thought he had died and I performed CPR on him and he went back to the hospital with lights and sirens. Next time I'll try to check for a pulse a little better. ;)

Took dad in for surgery at 5:30am with surgery at 7:30. We got to talk to the surgeon at 9:45 and by 11:30 he was headed home. His new pacemaker is from St. Judes and is designed to do a better job of controlling afib and he gets a device to monitor his pacemaker at home which plugs into the phone line to send in reports to the manufacturer and cardiologist. Pretty darned good!!! :)

Added some new succulents and some natural colored DG, a little paint work and there ya go!
