Mine are all planted in the ground and did fine last winter there. My AeAe is also in the ground (far right in the picture). They were planted April, 2010. The nights in my area get down into the 40's mainly. In January and February, temps can go into the mid to high 30's. I think there was a few nights at 33 even. After winter was over, I had a few leaves that looked terrible and had to be cut off. There was so brown on the edges, and the wind had shredded some as well, but they recovered just fine.

However, I just noticed that you are in Zone 8, and so you would probably want to dig yours up and bring into a greenhouse in the winter if you decided to plant them in the ground during your growing season.
