Hi

I live in Texas and even though our winter is short it can be quite brutal cold wise every now and then.
I was planning to grow a few pups indoors over winter and my question is which ones are the most suitable vs trying to make them survive in the garage?

- Gran Nain
- Dwarf Cavendish
- Mona Lisa
- Ice Cream
- Orinoco
- Dwarf Brazilian

The selected one(s) would be in a south facing window in the bath room with a skylight above so light wise I don't think it would be too bad.

Many thanks

Unless you have TALL ceilings, you should go with a dwarf; I'm partial to dwarf orinocos myself, being hooked on tostones!

My bad, it is actually Dwarf Orinoco.

Are you saying Dwarf Orinoco would be good to grow indoors??

I've never tried it, but would suspect so.
I have a mat of them right outside my office window & have been growing the critters for several years.
They handle partial shade/subdued light very well (ever since we had to remove the "big trees" they were under they've been under shade cloth).
I just had a couple decide to grow an extra 4' tall but I understand that rarely happens.
They're otherwise seldom over 6' tall & would be easily manageable in a standard 8' room, even with a pot a couple feet deep.
I was supposed to send some pups to my niece outside Ft. Hood for indoor propagation, so yours won't be the only ones down there. ;)
If you starve them they should go 2, maybe 3 years without fruiting, if all you're after is foliage.
Otherwise they make the best tostones I've had.

I don't believe one of them is more suited to grow indoors.,over the others. Your only restriction is the size of the plant. Since Orinoco is the most cold hardy ?

I had 2 grain nian in my barn and it got down to 26 a week ago and they still got burned bad the leafs turned black in 2 days I cut the heads off and in 2 days they had new shoots 6" tall. I also had 2 truly tiny in the barn and they did not get bit at all. They still have full green leafs.

Saba has by far been the best growing indoor banana for me. My ice cream banana didnt budge all winter long, but then again, I only watered it 3 times from November to March. Id go with the one that has the best chance fruting next spring. Which ever one is the healthiest and has the best chance to really start fruting deserves a jump start to spring!
