Something has been digging these 6 to 8 inch deep holes in and around the banana mats as well as the lawn. Six to 8" wide at the surface and pointy at the bottom.
First time having this problem so I did some research and talked to locals.
Also found a Texas blogsite that indicated "dillers" were the cause.
Everybody else agreed -- I got armadillos a'diggin!
A Texas professional trapper said set up a one door trap like this..............

The "wings" are for guiding the diller, whose supposed to have poor eyesite, into the trap. Set up has entrance pointed to shallow hole dug out under fence.
Suspended over the paddle is a section of nylon stocking with 1/2 a container of earthworms from local bait shop.
Well---------- no dillers so far - just 3 possums. And the last possum tore down the bag and ate all the worms!!!
What do you think? And please do not tell me these things are bigger than this trap.

Here is everyhting you could wnat to know about armadillos
Nine-banded Armadillo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine-banded_Armadillo)
They are not particulalry agile, so if your property is fenced (with a fence they can't dig under) they aren't much of a nuisance. I'm not aware of any repellants for them, but you may try Irish Spring soap, works for me to keep deer off things (they can't stand the smell). Just make flakes of the bar with a pocket knife and spread the flakes around what you don't want chewed up.

What a little pig! My word! I would never invite that glutton again to any banquet, especially one,
which serves such juicy delicacies.
That is exactly what I think! :ha:
Sorry for not being more constructive, but I don't even know, what a diller is???
Well anyway, better luck the next time,
Olaf

Have you told the makers of Irish Spring about that? :ha: :ha: :ha:

I've had a very busy last few weeks, but I did ask the wildlife folks I work with and they told me that the best way to get rid of hole diggers is to get rid of their food. Which means treating you soil with an insecticide that kills grubs and worms. Something with the active ingredient imidicloprid would work. If you were out in the country like me you could shoot it, but where you live that would involve a visit from the police.

I don't think an Armadillo could make it through that hole unless it a a baby one.
I have to agree they taste like pork and make awesome BBQ sandwiches.
Crossbows are silent BUT make sure you have a backstop. Don't want arrows flying all around the neighborhood.
