After planting in July 2010

Picture from July 2 2011 after a rough Winter. All were wrapped and only the P-stem survived.

This was the last one in the row and here is how it looked after I unwarapped it on February 21 2011. It was supposed to be a Raja Puri but we were not sure. This was typical of how all four looked after unwrapping.

They have all grown considerably since July this year and a bloom was produced on the one on the far end (the possible Raja Puri). Picture taken October 3 2011.

A few more pictures of the bloom.

Sorry for the poor quality on this one.

I'm thinking it is an Orinoco. What are your opinions?

Wow! Those are some nice pics! I'm thinking about getting a Raja myself since they stand up well to the fall winds we get here. Good luck on getting some nice fruit!:D

Good luck with the bloom, it is getting late but hope it makes it. Our first frost is the middle of November but sometimes it is a little later. We hope it is later since we have a lot of veggies in containers and moving them is a task. Think we will try to cover them and see what happens. Good luck again.

By triangular do you mean three lobed as oppossed to store bananas that are mostly four lobed or are you referring to the severe angularity of the young fruit.

I guess "angular" would have been a better word to use.

Even in the ripe fruit the severe "angularity" stands out, though they do tend to plump up quite a bit more when ripe:

Thanks Bob,

I believe that mine is definately a Orinoco now. Just for the record I checked the fruit and there are both three lobed and four lobed BUT there's no missing the severe angularity. My other Orinoco that bloomed on June first has very plump fruit and I probably will take it soon. After this new one quits setting fruit I'll clip the bloom and probably the last two hands to try and get the others to plump quicker. That and maybe late frost/freeze may get me a few more bananas this year!!

It's been four months and a few days for my first stalk. I keep thinking I'm going to start seeing yellow soon. Has anyone timed the days from bloom to coloring.

Hi Bo,

Thanks for the compliment. My bananas really enjoy hanging out with the blueberries who share thier frequent waterings with them. When it comes to awesome bananas though, you are still the master grower in this part of the world. I know your bananas miss your care.

Sunfish,

Thanks for the link. I'm quite sure this is an orinoco.

There's going to be a world of difference depending on how well they've been fed; yours look pretty dang healthy, so you might get by in as little as 6 months +/-.
Break out the potash sandwiches! ;)

You can do 'em green, too. They make the GREATEST tostones!

Tostones are my back up plan which at this late date should realistically be my only plan. Of course I still have to get them filled out before a frost/freeze occurs!

If it takes six months then December first is the target date. Some of the fruit in the bunch are not quite filled yet so I will try to be patient and hopefully I'll be rewarded.

Has anyone tried the Guineitos en Escabeche? I read the recipe and it sounded a bit strange. I couldn't imagine what it would taste like with the olive oil and vinegar. Definately different than Tostones.

Guineitos en Escabeche (http://www.indio.net/taino/main/buren/guineo.htm) recipe link thanks to Sunfish

We enjoy asian, creole and most any recipe that we can tone own to our taste. I will be making chowder according to you recipe. I love clam chowder but have not been able to harvest quaghogs recently but hope to do so this early winter in St Petersburg, Florida when we visit MIL.
Thanks

Those plants are 'Orinoco', not 'Raja Puri'.

Thanks Gabe,

I have another "Raja Puri" that we are fairly certain is real. Maybe next year it will bloom for confirmation! Also waiting on possible Goldfinger, Ladyfinger, Williams Hybrid and Ice Cream to bloom. Maybe next year!

Darkman.... I am pretty sure that the pup I brought you this past summer is a Raja that I took from the one that fruited this year. It took about 3 yrs. before they started pupping, they were very slow starters but I was able to take several and move them around to seperate locations this year. So next year I will be covered up with Raja Puri. So get that shovel sharpened up.
